'open' dialog box (offc 2k ver 9.0.3821 sr-1)

Recently, when I open any offc 2k app (word, excel, access), I click on the Open button on the tool bar to choose the document I want opened. When I click on the scrol bar to navigate within the box, the application I'm in closes immediately. I've tried the Repair Wizard to no avail. Must I uninstall than reinstall Office again to hopefully correct this madening nuisance!? Please help, this is driving me crazy! Thank you.

Check for a virus first. This is one of the issues that happens when one is infected with the Klez bugs. With this virus, a lot apps will quick working. <img src=/S/devil.gif border=0 alt=devil width=15 height=15>

    Hi Dave,
thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I have installed the latest Norton definitions to my anti virus program and ran it twice but it found no infections. What else can I check?

Do you have any macros or addins running?

What happens when you start Word and File...Save...and scroll in the folder list? Same thing?

I wonder if it's the scrolling or the Open or what???

when I use the open command in word it shuts down (Word) as soon as I click on the scrol bar. If I use the arrow keys there's no problem. If I go directly to the My Documents folder I can use the scrol bar to navigate. So what could the problem be?!!

My "memory banks" are suddenly recalling a time when my users where making similar claims about scrolling in a Word doc cause Sudden Application Death Syndrome and the problem was a corrupt file ...not in the Open dialog box though. In the actual document.

You could try renaming your NORMAL.DOT file just to see if that has any effect. Also check Tools...Macros to see if any FileOpen macro might have snuck in there to mess you up. That's how some macro viruses work. They replace your normal commands with a macro that could do anything -- usually not something you want.

    Ok DoryO,
you may be on to something. I tried to access my templates from the New toolbar but Word crashes everytime I click on the More Templates command. Any suggestions as to how to rename my Normal.dot template or how to access the More Template window?

Hunt it down with the Windows Start button...Find files...search your C: for the file NORMAL.DOT.

However, I'm doubtful this is your problem. It sounds like your dialog boxes don't like you to list additional files or directories or something. Very weird. You'll probably have to uninstall and reinstall to exorcise this demon possession. In the mean time, it's easy to rename your NORMAL.DOT to something like NOTNORMAL.DOT. When you restart Word it'll create a fresh copy of the NORMAL.DOT.

Virus-checking might turn up something. Any problem when you're in your browser and you try to File...Save...scroll?

    DoryO:
I deleted my normal.dot files but it didn't stop my demon. Opening File...Save...in my browser and using the scroll worked just fine. This just seems to be happening in Offc2K. Virus scans show nothing. I've also used norton antivirus in dos mode to locate viruses but it found nothing. I believe I'll just remove my present Offc suite and reinstall it and maybe that will do the trick. I'll let you all know what happens. Thank you and everyone whotried to help me with this problem. I appreciate everyones comments and help.
