XP?!?

Is this to introduce yet another failure by Microsoft? What are the details? Where are the links? Who's got the skinny on XP?

Thanks!

Billie (Gates) was on a News Special here in the Seattle area Cable News Network, and had a show n' tell about the new product. You will be seeing more detail information as MS releases it to the press.
There will be some more testing going on, but this will be a good spot to post those links about Windows XP. Just make sure that they are good pages and NOT just another copy of what MS has posted.

XP Is the replacement for the "consumer" versions of Windows, i.e., the 9* versions.

hardly a failure, as the others have mentioned, it'll replace win9x versions with easier-to-use versions of NT.

a consumer preview (aka beta) can be purchased, details of cost unknown. beta 1 is available to msdn subscribers and beta 2 will soon be released to official testers.

Excellent site for allthings Windows, and also XP has the most dramatic change to the UI since 95 came out. Word is it's XML based. We shall see. Skinnable, it definitely is.

Howard,
There is going to be TWO major flavors of XP and the Professional Flavor will have several sub flavors, i.e., Desktop, WorkStation and Server. These may NOT be the formal names but they are MORE than just a replacement. There is NOT much difference from the Windows 2000 Flavor. MS has stated that there will NOT be much movement from 2K to XP. But the Consumer version is close to Windows 2K as one can get without ALL of the major security hooks.

skinable, yes. xml, well yeah, in the way that win98, me and 2k have web views on the folders. XP's got web views everywhere.

i have a copy on a laptop and a desktop. I despise it on my desktop but it makes the screen easier to read on the laptop, with it's use of the new open font technology (did i get the name right?)

ClearType, wasn't that the marketing name for it? Not even a new idea but they're gonna cash in on it...when the final release comes out we shall see...

i think so - the icons in the font folder have an O icon, which is why i keep thinking open type. it really does make a difference on laptop screens (also flat moitors for those lucky dogs who can afford one )
