OFFXP: Error 1328 When You Apply Office XP SP-1 (10.0.2627.0)

I purchased MS Office XP Professional from a gent on line. I'm not certain, but I think that he purchased a an Office volume license. Anyway, I installed Office XP Professional without incident, from CD. I have downloaded Service Pack 1 and attempted to apply it, and am receiving an Error Message 1328. Microsoft's on line knowledge base article says this can occur if both of these are true: "You originally installed an unreleased version of Microsoft Office XP. -and- You downloaded and installed the Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1) update. " I didn't install an unreleased version; my version is 10.0.2627.0. Although I did attempt to install SP-1. The gent that I purchased the software from doesn't have a clue why I am having a problem. He claims that he downloaded and installed SP-1 without any problems. I'd be eternally grateful to anyone who can offer me any suggestions as to how I may apply SP-1. Microsoft's suggestion, "To resolve this problem and install SP-1, you must purchase a retail edition of Microsoft Office XP (which displays an Office hologram). Only a retail version of Office XP can be updated. Beta or unreleased versions cannot be updated to SP-1. " hardly seems fair, since I just purchased this copy. Thank you!

I doubt seriously that the "gent on line" had a right to resell that software. A volume license isn't for resale. If you don't have a CD with a hologram on it, you've been snookered.

did you purchase a legal copy for something in the neighborhood of $200, boxed and in the antitheft clamshell? Or was just a CD, possibly home burned, no clamshell, book or standard box?

if the first, call MS, if the second, live and learn - you really didn't purchase aopy of office, you were scammed and wasted your money on a pirated version. (And you should report the seller to piracy@microsoft.com)

I'm having the same problem. I bought a new pc with Win&Office XP. I tried to download Office XP SP1&2 and received the same error: 1328. I'd sent error reports to MS but now after finding this post I'm thinking that I've been taken too. I bought the pc with assurance that I'd have no problem with updates. So now I guess i'm looking at trying to send this *+$&^%% back and trying to get my dollars back or just buying the pc minus Office XP and buying it 'legally' but it beats me how a so-called legit company can sell a pc and claim that licensing and updates are above board.

If you buy a new PC with Office installed, it's an OEM version of Office, not full retail, and you're supposed to get the support and updates from your vendor, not from Microsoft. Last time I looked, some companies like Compaq did NOT include CDs with the PC, but I admit I haven't checked in years because I insist on a full retail version of the products to avoid just that situation ... not to mention avoiding having to try and wring support out of the OEM. Call the support number listed in your computer documentation and get them to tell you how to do it.

Thanks, Charlotte. I called the company I bought from and they said it's "third party" not part of their OEM. Called MS and after giving them my Product ID they told me 50 other people have the same i.d. and that the 'two allowed support calls' had already been used. So I have to go and buy Office XP if I'm interested in getting SP1&2. "I shoulda known better".

That's a real bummer to hear about your experience. But, for whatever it's worth, I use an OEM copy of Office XP on my Dell and have had no problems with updates, downloads, patches, or service packs direct from MS. And they included the CD's complete with hologram.

Maybe you can get a discount for ratting out the seller? Certainly unethical and very possibly illegal to be giving out fake product keys.
