    Removing Explorer window (XP Home)

Just bought new computer w/XPHome installed, and following installation of my USB scanner and its software (Visioneer Paperport), I have this explorer window that shows up every time I log on that just shows the Visioneer folder icon. It doesn't interfere with anything, the software works fine, the only thing I can think of is that somewhere in the registry is an entry left over from the Visioneer installer to show this window. How can I remove this window from starting up every log on?

Run "MSconfig", go to the "Startup" tab and see if it (your scanner) is listed, if so remove the check mark.

It's not the program(Paperport) or any scanner software that's running. It's simply an Explorer window showing the Visioneer folder, the kind that you get when you click on My Computer and select a folder.

Msconfig shows no scanner or Paperport entries running at startup.

Being that you are using XP, remember that each account has a startup folder under Start Menu, Programs, plus there is the one in "Allusers', so you need to check all of them.

Checked 'em. Explorer is not listed in any of them. I have two user accounts on the system, and in no startup folder is there an entry for Explorer

Most likely it is being started from the registry. Usually the best way to do this is by using a tweaking program such as X-Setup from XTEQ systems. It is free (for home use) and will allow you to change hundreds of Windows settings including software loaded at startup. Can be downloaded from many sites - current version is 6.2. A word of warning - when you use this or a similar program if you are not sure what you are changing DONT. Be very careful about modifying the registry. BACK UP FIRST.

Man Cotton, I hate to jump on Dave's bandwagon, but in this forum, back in late January when I installed XP Pro, you'll see a few entries from me where I had the same problem. Mine was a McAfee folder opening in Windows Explorer and it SURE 'NUF WAS a McAfee entry I found in MSCONFIG that was running some useless McAfee monitoring program, confirmed to be useless (unneeded) by their Tech Support.

When I un-checked that entry in MSCONFIG, the Explorer window stopped opening! Just for reference, the McAfee file was ALOGSERV and no way did the MSCONFIG entry look anything like an Explorer entry. Ya better keep diggin'
