    OpenOffice.org and File Associations

Hello, I have a friend who recently tried out OpenOffice.org on his Windows 2000 machine. This machine also has Microsoft Office 2000 installed. It appears that OpenOffice changed his file associations so that, for example, double clicking on a file with the extension 'doc' will cause OpenOffice to launch instead of Microsoft Word.

The friend then uninstalled OpenOffice, but his previous file associations for Microsoft Office were not restored.

Can anyone suggest an easy, automated way to restore his previous Microsoft Office file associations in one swoop?

Thanks a lot for any advice.

I had to reinstall the office package. It (OpenOffice) changed ALL of the extensions, including your email, word processing, databases, spread sheets and many more. I tried diung it my self, but after a bout of a week finding another change I reinstalled MS Office.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Dave,

I'm not well up on my Windows 2000 -- I use it very infrequently. I was wondering if it takes some kind of restorable "checkpoint" before new software is installed. I think that's called a System Control Checkpoint or something similar? If so, is this process automatic or does the user have to "checkpoint" manually before the software is installed? I'm thinking that if it is automatic, my friend might be able to just restore from the checkpoint?

Thanks a lot for your advice!

Windows Me and XP come with a "Restore", which is makes restore points at different times, and one may make a restore point at any time. The other older OS's Win 95, 98 NT, 2K and etc, one needs a third party type, i.e., GoBack and etc. These restore points must be made just before the install of a program or hardware to so one will have a current configuation to back out to.

I thought there was a command-line switch that you could use that would trigger the Office applications to re-register their file types. If I've seen it anywhere, it's somewhere in the Lounge. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
