    Word 2002 text centering (SP1)

I have Word 2002 SP1 running on Win XP Pro. Whenever I try to center some text, no matter what method I use to select it, Word centers all the text in the document. I can then click Undo once and all the extraneous centering is undone and only the text that was originally selected is centered. This also happens when bolding text. It may be happening in other tasks that I haven't tried yet.

    Ideas?

    Thanks,
    Mike

Sounds to me like maybe you've got the style on which this paragraph is based set to automatically update. To check this out, select one of the offending paragraphs, then go into Format|Style|Modify and make sure the 'automatically update' option is unchecked.

This is a guess, because I don't have 2002, BUT check under Tools/AutoCorrect/Autoformat as you type (unless they've moved it) & UNTICK "Define styles based on your formatting". I'm betting that it's ticked & that every time you apply direct formatting, Word is redefining all your styles to have that.

By the way, I'd untick just about everything in that box...unless you love surprises.

    Cheers,

If Phils solutuion is not the answer, then as indicated previously by macropod, if you are using the same Style for all the text in the document and that Style has the "Automatic Update" feature turned on, then this may be the source of your problem. You may want to consider defining a new style that is centred that you can apply to only the text you want centred, with the font and spacing you want and do the same thing for text you want bold. That is exactly what was doing it.
Thanks - don't know that I would have ever figured that out by myself.
    Appreciated.
