log off/shut down

Ugh... every so often this beautiful IBM ThinkPad refuses to shut down or log off. I get no log off/shut down sound and have to resort to holding the power button down for a few seconds to get the screen to go black.

I expect to get the hard drive security/integrity warning but it's not there (?)

So... any ideas on what could be causing this temper tantrum or what I need to do to resolve the challenge?

If anybody knows, it's gonna be this pool of wisdom

    Re: log off/shut down

Just a thought, but on our Thinkpads, it's common practice here to disable all sleep/hibernation/power functions as this was suggested by an IBM tech to treat a similar problem (if not the same).

Make sure it's done in both the operating system, and the BIOS.

Thnaks, Chris... have yet to venture into the BIOS to disable these settings. Any tips, advice, or how-to's?

You've probably already checked this, but sometimes a shutdown hang is the result of something as simple as a corrupted sound file. Have you tried removing the Exit Windows sound in Control Panel/Sounds?

Hey, that's a good idea... it's worth a shot, especially since the 'stubborness' is intermittent.
