    Tira,

The message itself isn't really "compressible" ... but attachments are ... The "more-or-less" standard is to ZIP your attachment before sending. If you have Winzip 8.1, and it was installed correctly, right-clicking on a file within Windows Explorer provides the option to "Zip and email". If you don't have this version of Winzip ... and/or don't have Winzip at all you can check it out at:

    http://www.winzip.com/

There are other alternatives as well ... one add-in for Outlook that I've tried once-upon-a-time (was okay but I found it annoying that ALL of my attachments were zipped) is called Zipout ... that does the zipping upon sending messages ... you can check it out at:

    http://www.microeye.com/zipout/

You could also check out Slipstick.com for other similar add-ins at:

    http://www.slipstick.com/addins/compression.htm

Note that certain types of files (for example "jpg" pictures) don't really compress substantially upon zipping (and in some cases the resulting file size even gets larger after zipping). When you send email with binary attachments of most any sort the message itself gets coded in such a manner that the resultant size of the message is generally larger (sometimes substantially so) than the original message plus attachments. That said, zipping is still usually a good thing to do --- as long as your recipients can up-zip the attachments!!!

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Allen,

Thank you very much for your info. I'll try the options you gave me. I am aware of Winzip, was just wondering if there is something IN Outlook I could use to compress, but I guess not.

    Thanks again,

    Allen,

One question, what is a "binary attachment"?

Re: compressing email msg (outlook 2000)

Practically everything you attach is "binary" ... the term binary was always something of a misnomer ... but it I seem to recall that it used to mean a file that used the 8th binary bit in a "word" to code its meaning ... one early method of transmitting information using modems depended upon the 8th binary bit to help check for accuracy of transmission ... so any file that used the 8th binary bit had to be coded to words that only used the first 7 bits ... the various coding methods (e.g., UUENCODE, MIME, BASE64) ... quite often results in attachments that are larger than the original.

So except for a plain text (txt) file when encoded for transmission attachments usually take up more space than the original.

Please note that I'm really just an end-user of this stuff (computers) ... not really a programmer ... so I've probably garbled some to the word-usage above (so other folks on the lounge --- should feel free to correct me.)

    Hope this helps.
