    parens around footnootes (WD 2000)

Is it possible to have parentheses appear automatically around footnote markers in the text of a document?

If you have "Arial Unicode MS" installed, you can use that for the "footmote reference" style, and insert the footnotes as "user defined" footnotes from the subset "Enclosed Alphanumerics".

The font contains characters for (1) to (20) -- which should be enough if you restart the numbering on each page.

In case you use "Times New Roman" or another serif font, the Arial footnotes will not look too professional; a serif Unicode font like Mincho (that ships with Word 2000) or a free serif Unicode font like Titus Cyberbit Basic or Thryomanes would look better.

Inserting the user-defined footnotes is a bit of a chore though, especially for the first footnote.

Unfortunately, character styles like Footnote Reference do not have numbering style options. Or given how buggy numbering can be, maybe it's not such a big loss.

If you don't mind doing a replace (which you can record to a macro), you can parenthesize all of your references after the fact in one fell swoop. See attached.

    Hi Jefferson,

Nice method, too. An advantage of your method is that you can get rid of the parentheses easily ... replace "(" and ")" in style "Footnote reference" with nothing.

(BTW, you can leave "Find what:" empty and search/replace without "Use Wildcards")
