    TOC spills over 2 pages (W97 SR2 on Win2000 SP2)

My document has a simple table of contents built via the Insert | Index and Tables | Table of Contents tab feature. It spills on to a second page, no big deal, but I would like to head this second page with something e.g. Contents (continued) or maybe "last Heading 1 text" (continued).

I could achieve this effect by putting this info in the page header, taking care it only appears on this page by appropriate use of section breaks etc. but then the text will be too high up the page so I'd have to alter the top margin/top header position to get it lower. This is getting complicated so...

I would expect not be able to split the TOC, as it is all one field, but can I have two TOCs? One that truncates at an appropriate point and another that picks up from where the previous one ends?

Or is there another way to solve this one?

Putting the TOC into a separate section and adjusting the header settings so that the header text comes down to where you want it, is probably the least complicated and most feasible option.

Trying to split the TOC or generate two TOCs (for different parts of the doc) is just going to cause you to lose lots of sleep!

You can get close to what you want by putting the TOC in a table, with a Heading row.

The problem with this is that I can't see an easy way to get different text on the first page of the TOC - maybe some sort of IF field? I tried using a StyleRef to TOC 1 but this gave the entire TOC line, including the Tab and the page number.

    Thank you Gary and StuartR,

But the really simple way is to reduce the size of the TOC by only displaying TOC1 and TOC2, I was going as far as Heading 3. I'd still prefer the whole thing so I will experiment with my original idea of section breaks but I'll also try out the 'TOC in a table' hint.

If the spill-over is only minor, you could also try changing the formatting of the TOC styles. Depending on what you're using, you may be able to use smaller leading/trailing spaces and/or smaller fonts to get the whole lot to fit on one page.

I've used that trick in the past but this time the spill over is significant..

    (only sort of) stuck
