Excel file too Large to open (Excel 97)

    Hi,

I hope someone can help me...I have a user who has been working on a file for sometime now. The file is 34.5MB!, now when she or I try to open it, it get's half way then stops...the processor time goes up to 100% and the hour glass appears. Task Manager says 'not responding'.

I am presuming the file has just got too large now and was wondering if anyone knows a way around this such as splitting it in 2?, or if it has been encountered before?

If anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful...

    Thanks

    Kevin

Re: Excel file too Large to open (Excel 97)

I can throw in my boilerplate answer for this:

Options to try and open a corrupt file

    - Set calculation to manual
    - open the file, but disable macros (assuming you've set macro security to medium: Tools, Macro, security)
    - As soon as you've clicked the disable macros button, press control-pageup or control-pagedown, thus changing sheets.

If that does not work, try creating a link to the file:

    ='c:my documents[MyFileName.xls]Sheet1'!A1

and copy right and down. This at least gets you the worksheets values.

Sometimes the Excel viewer (or Word) enables you to open the file and copy information out of it.

Also, Excel XP can sometimes repair XL files with trouble.

Lastly: Download the office suite from www dot sun dot com slash staroffice (awkward spelling to hopefully avoid another autodeletion of posting...) it's a killer app for file recovery.

To add to Jan Karel's suggestions...

I've occasionally hadd succes opening a "corrupt" Excel file through Internet Explorer- then saving it back as Excel format.

    Hiya,

Thanks for both your ideas, I gave them a go but with no luck so far.

I tried the site that you mentioned Jan but it said the document could not be found, I tried searching via their site but could only find patches...do you know where it is on their website?

    Cheers

MSoft has a method to recover data from corrupted files. To review thread click here.

You are correct, Sun has stopped giving away Star Office for free now. You might try www.openoffice.org

I haven't tried this one out yet, but from what I read it's basically the same thing Star Office was.

Once again thanks for your suggestions,

I'll try the MSoft ideas and if that doesn't work then I'll try downloading openoffice and see if that works.

I'll let you know how it went,

    Thanks
