Desktop Icons Mysteriously Moving

Some elf in W2K seems to be taking it upon itself to move my desktop icons around. I like the usual suspect icons (My Computer, NW Neighborhood, Outlook, My Documents, Recycle Bin) aligned vertically on the right side of the desktop. Somehow, these icons begin to pop over to the left side. Anyone know how I can stop this annoying behavior?

Thanks, - Al

Turn OFF the the auto arrange.
Right click the desktop, select the Icons entry and if there is a check mark in front of Auto Arrange remove it.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Yep I'm familiar with AutoArrange. I always disable it. No selections are checked for icons, which is the way I want it. This way I can place icons wherever I want on the dektop. This behavior only started recently (last 4 months) and on two different systems I use. Must be my magic touch ...

I have the same problem --- it happens everyonce in a while --- not often enough for me be figure it out ... but I suspect that it's because I have (and maybe you too) Active Web Content enabled on my desktop (which I didn't have when I had Windows NT ...) the only reason I say that is that if I right-click on my desktop and click on the Active Desktop, then set it to one of the web-pages that I want displayed on the desktop --- THEN ALL OF MY ICONS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY DESKTOP GET MOVED.

Anyway --- you might check that out and disable that feature if you find it truly annoying (note that I haven't disabled it because w/o I can't have a desktop background associated with jpg files).

So anyway --- see if on your desktop properties (Web tab) the Active Web Content is checked as in my system:

Try a freeware application called 'Win Tidy'. This lets you (amongst other useful things) save your desktop icon arrangement and restore it if it gets corrupted.

This is not the only culprit, as I always have active desktop turned off but still see this behaviour occasionally, especially, but not exclusively, when windows (not the computer, just windows) restarts after being prompted to (eg following a system settigns change or refreshing my MSP proxy client). It happens on my Win98SE machine too.
