    autoformat (Word2000 sr1a)

How do I configure Word to stop autoformating every paragraph of the same style when I make a format change in a single paragraph? For instance, I copy and paste from a web page into a new word document. I decide to bold or change color of a few words in one paragraph, or want to indent a paragraph, or whatever. Immediately, Word assumes it knows what I want better than I do and it applies that formatting to all paragraphs of the same style. This is making me nuts!!

It sounds like you have your styles set to automatically update - an evil "feature" of Word. Go to Format/Style, select the style that is doing this, click on Modify, then deselect Automatically update. I recommend never using this feature.

Apart from turing the auto-update off, you really should use styles that carry the attributes you want. That would make consistency easier to maintain and updating to a new format a whole lot easier.
