Larger Cursor? (Word 97 latest SR)

I'm looking for a better way to find my cursor while composing text in Word97. The problem is especially acute after scrolling through several pages. What ever happened to the gool old block cursor that you could see from everywhere (anybody remember MultiMate???)?

Any suggestions for a better cursor (or maybe just a way to change the color of the black one) would be much appreciated. Shareware, freeware, buyware, all OK.

Please understand, I'm not talking about cursors for windows in general -- I have all the fancy ones I need. I'm talking about the that appears while typing text in Word97.

TIA<

Re: Larger Cursor? (Word 97 latest SR)

This question comes up about every 6 months and so far we haven't found a way to modify the vertical bar that identifies the insertion point (which I think is what you're referring to). Whatever controls it, it seems fairly consistent throughout Windows.

You could write a macro (and assign it a keystroke or to a button) that would select the character next to the insertion point to make something like a block as a short term workaround. But if you do find an answer, perhaps on sites devoted to accessibility issues for Windows, you will make many friends.

Re: Larger Cursor? (Word 97 latest SR)

Thanks for the response. Based on a Google search I tried a trick that worked very differently from the way it was advertised (much to my happy surprise).

I did Ctrl-Alt-+ (i.e., hold down Ctrl and Alt and hit the + on the numeric keypad with NumLock on). That made the vertical bar that precedes the next typed character [whatever that's called] into a bold vertical line. The cursor (i.e., the thing that moves when I move my mouse) went from bold to "regular."

That's all I really needed. Dunno if it'll work that way for everyone (it was supposed to turn the cursor into a "+" , according to the internet tip), but I'm a happy camper!

Be very careful using this shortcut. According to the Windows help it is used to...

Customize the shortcut key for a menu command. When you type this shortcut key and then select a menu command, the Customize Keyboard dialog box opens so you can add, change, or remove the shortcut key.

Re: Larger Cursor? (Word 97 latest SR)

Stuart,

Thanks for the expression of concern. I typed the shortcut [Ctrl-Alt-NumLock+] and then (if I'm remembering correctly) I closed the Customize Keyboard dialog box without adding, changng, or removing, any shortcut key.

I've just spent several hours doing major edits on a 75-page document, with no problems. The insertion point is still bold, and the cursor is nice and [all but] invisible until I jiggle my mouse when I need it.

All's well so far. I promise to confess publicly if I ever run into trouble.

Thanks again,

Herb

I'm glad you have a solution. In Word 2000, it seems to work differently, or maybe I have a different basic setup: my insertion point bar doesn't change (it's already somewhat bold) but the mouse pointer turns into a cloverleaf. I guess I prefer the arrow...

Re: Larger Cursor? (Word 97 latest SR)

I tried the Control and Alt and plus sign command. It turned my cursor into a four leaf clover sign (?). I suspect the solution is somewhere in the registry files.

Thanks for your assistance.

Re: Larger Cursor? (Word 97 latest SR)

I got the clover also, at first, but as I did some typing it disappeared and the bold vertical bar remained. The clover starts out--I think--as a replacement for the cursor (NOT the insertion point). Since I have my mouse set to "hide cursor while typing," that clover went away when I started typing, never to return. Somehow, on my machines, at least, this sequence of events leaves the bold insertion point while doing away with the clover; the cursor comes back as the one I selected via "pointers" under "mouse" in Control Panel!

I guess I should have posted the usual warning from all the weight-loss commercials: your results may vary!

Regards,

Herb

Hi Bob:
The keyboard shortcuts of Alt+Ctrl+
Numpad+ changes the cursor to a clover is to bring up the Cutomize keyboard shortcut dialog box
- (minus) is to delete items from the menu
+ (plus) to add items to various menus

I wouldn't use this to change the cursor. If you forget & click on something quickly, you may have unintended results.

Re: Larger Cursor? (Word 97 latest SR)

Again, thanks for the suggestions. Maybe sometime in the distant future Microsoft will let us change this to suit the user. For the time being I just zoom in to make the characters larger, which makes it easier to see the insertion point.

It's off the subject, but I asked how to change the color and font of the comments in Excel, and make the changes permanent. It took almost a year for me to find a post that instructed me to use the Desktop Properties, Appearance, Tool Tip to make the necessary changes.

Hi Jefferson,

Just to add my worth, I think the 'correct' way to change a given mouse cursor/pointer is via Control Panel (Mouse|Pointers). There you can modify the cursor/pointer appearance for any or all of its variations - with MS drivers at least. Changes made there would presumably work across all applications.

Everybody just ignored your post, but you nailed it!

Now, I have Intellipoint software installed so I don't know if
the basic driver offers the same functionality:

Select the Text Pointer item then click Browse. Pick the "icon" of
choice -- make your own! -- and wherever the IP appears in any
Windows app, it'll appear as selected

But... once you click in the document, you get the same old vertical bar, which I think was the problem of the original poster.
