    desktop shortcuts (WinXP)

Trying to find (again) how to create desktop shortcuts for restart and shutdown. I had them for both WIN98 & WinXP but somehow lost them without writing them down.
XP was partially?...rundll32.exe user.exec, exitwindowsexec????? for restart and the shutdown was similar to this .
(got to remember to keep track of these things)

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!

    Re: desktop shortcuts (WinXP)

See this article at PC Magazine.

Right click on your desktop and choose New > Shortcut.
Browse to find and select ...System32Shutdown.exe
Once complete, you can edit the properties and add switches to the command line:
    -l (to log off)
    -s (to shutdown)
    -r (to reboot)

Other tweaks are described in the article above.

    Re: desktop shortcuts (WinXP)

Further to my last post, it appears that shutdown.exe only shuts down the OS, not the hardware. If you want it to completely turn your pc off you may need to do something else.

    Vik~

    Go and check this KillWin out. It is an itty-bitty (that's a technical term) <img src=/S/eyeout.gif border=0 alt=eyeout width=15 height=15> applet for XP that does just what you need w/ 1 clickety-click, and, yes, it is <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15>
