    Daily wallppaer

    I get bored easily.

    I created a Paintbrush file, called it Daily.BMP. Contained nothing special at all. Went to my desktop properties (right-click on a blank area of screen, choose Properties), and set the wallpaper to the Daily.BMP. Confirmed out of there. Sure'nuff, boring wallpaper.

    Then I created a folder called d:imagesbmp, but you can call it what you want.

    Then I grabbed a graphic (GIF, BMP, JPG, don't care) and in a photo-editor (Corel, MSoft etc) changed the image size to 8.54 inches by 6.42 inches. Saved it as 01.BMP in my d:imagesbmp folder.

    Then I grabbed another graphic (GIF, BMP, JPG, don't care) and in a photo-editor (Corel, MSoft etc) changed the image size to 8.54 inches by 6.42 inches. Saved it as 02.BMP in my d:imagesbmp folder.

    And so on 03.bmp, 04.bmp etc.

    Finally I placed a DOS COPY command in my Autoexec.bat file which copies the calendar day's BMP from the d:images/bmp folder right over the top of the Daily.BMP.

    Result: I have a different wallpaper each day. Yesterday was my granddaughter, today a map of the Adelaide Hills, etc.

    Now when I'm browsing the web and see a neat graphic, I process it and save it as the next higher number. I'm up to 37.bmp. Of course, there is no 37th day of the month, but if, say, the 15th bmp gets boring, I just move the 37th to the 15th. Bye bye 15th, hello 15th.

    I can post a copy of the code to generate day-of-month in DOS of so requested.

    Re: Daily wallpaper

    Here's my AutoExec.bat. If any installation program modifies it, I get to see the change pretty quickly. AutoExec calls Startme.

    <pre> SET SOUND=C:PROGRA~1CREATIVECTSND
    SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E MODE:0
    SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6
    PATH c:bat;c:util;C:WINDOWS;C:WINDOWSCOMMAND;COS
    SET TEMP=v:temp
    PROMPT $p$g
    call c:batstartme.bat
    </pre>

    Here's my StartMe.bat. You can see the COPY command as the lsat line.

    <pre>c:utillog -t rebooted
    :: C:WINdowsCOMMANDMSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /M:10 /L:Z
    set path=c:bat;c:util;%path%
    call c:batbackreg.bat
    set daily=%yr%%mt%%dy%
    if not exist d:greaves%yr%%mt%%dy%nul md d:greaves%yr%%mt%%dy%
    c:UTILCED -b2000,200,2400,300,200,200 -fc:utilced.cfg
    LOADHIGH c:utilvisitype
    c:
    CD util
    c:UTILSETKEY setkey.txt
    c:UTILSTACKEY /*800/
    SET temp=v:temp
    SET tmp=v:temp
    SET prompt=$p$g
    SET SOUND=c:PROGRA~1CREATIVECTSND
    SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E MODE:0
    SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6
    PATH > C:BATNULLPATH.BAT
    @echo off
    type d:greavesadminnews.txt
    call c:batavailabl c
    call c:batavailabl d
    call c:batavailabl e
    call c:batavailabl f
    cd temp
    if not exist c:ql2faxwinboxfax*.* goto NoFaxes
    @echo You have a fax!
    pause
    :NoFaxes
    REM End of startme.bat
    goto 999Exit
    :999exit
    copy d:imagesbitmaps%dy%.bmp d:imagesbitmapsdaily.bmp
    </pre>

    Here's the Backreg (backup the registry) batch file. It needs the date, so IT calls setdate which will set environment variables with today's date.

    <pre>REM backreg Christopher greaves Wednesday, November 12, 1997
    :: back up the registry and user configuration files

    Re: Daily wallppaer

    ... then I realised that instead of using %DY% to get a different wallpaper every DaY, I could use %SE% and get wallpaper according to the SEcond set at the time I rebooted!

    :: at least get a daily bitmap ranging from 01.bmp through 3.bmp
    copy d:imagesbitmaps%dy%.bmp d:imagesbitmapsdaily.bmp
    :: but then try randomising on the SEconds field ranging from 01.bmp through 60.bmp
    copy d:imagesbitmaps%se%.bmp d:imagesbitmapsdaily.bmp
