    Win98SE Shutdown Hang / It's Back

I recently replaced my primary drive; & reinstalled Win 98SE. Before I knew it, my machine was hanging at shutdown. I've instituted tweaks (that seem to help temporarily) from Q238096 (informational from Win 98 Support Center), but what's different since I replaced the drive is: When I get to the "Windows Is Shutting Down" window, I used to be able to wait for about 30 seconds & hit my off button. The machine would boot properly the next time it was switched on. When I do that now, the "Windows Was Not Properly Shut Down" utility runs at boot-up, checking my drives for errors. I have yet to download & install the Shutdown Supplement (Q239887), which I intend to do...but can anyone offer any ideas why the Scan Disc utility runs (now, with my new drive): & also how to actually rid oneself of this problem altogether? Thanks.

You need TweakUI . After installing go to the Boot tab and in the General area, from the drop down menu next to "Autorun Scandisk" choose "Never" and Scandisk will no longer run after an "Improper" shutdown. As to why it runs automatically, it's another MS default to protect you from yourself. <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15>

What's running in the background? Hit Start-Run and type msconfig and hit enter. What's checked?

    Re: Win98SE Shutdown Hang / It's Back

Ok. So sit down one day when you have some time. Go in there and uncheck everything, and restart. Shutdown. Does it shutdown properly? If so, then add things one at a time, particularly: NAV Agent, iamapp, WinPoET, QD FastandSafe, NPROTECT, ScriptBlocking, SymTray, and NCS_SS. Virus checkers (NAV and NPROTECT, I suspect are Norton?) can keep PCs from shutting down properly, and I don't know what those others are, but they could be doing it too. The ones I did NOT list are typical and should not be keeping you from shutting down, tho I suppose they could.

Anyway, add one in each time you start up again. You may want to add your virus checkers back first...for obvious reasons.

    Good luck!

Two suggestions for you. I highly doubt that you are having shurdown problems due to a cluttered hard drive that manifest themselves only when you shut down and at no other time. Shutdown problems have a myriad of causes, from an outdated, non-ACPI compliant system BIOS to device drivers that refuse to shut down properly. Make sure that you have the most recent hardware device drivers; you'll benefit from doing so regardless of whether or not it solves the shutdown issue. It can't hurt to clean up the hard drive - but it almost certainly isn't the reason the computer hangs on shutdown.

Here's a list of resources to get you started:

    Re: Win98SE Shutdown Hang / It's Back

    Hi Mark4man:
I have shutdown problems once in a while with Win98SE, primarily if I try to use standby. As a result, I've given up with standby & just turn off the monitor. In any event, here's some information that I've collected:

there's a 508k shutdown patch here for Windows 98 SE from Microsoft.

There's also a useful set of tips available from Jim Eshelman:
    http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm, http://www.aumha.org/a/shtdwnse.htm, http://www.aumha.org/kbshtdwn.htm that you can try.description

    Re: Win98SE Shutdown Hang / It's Back

I just came across this tip. Although it deals with suspend, rather than shutdown, it's worth a shot.
My Computer Locks Up When In Suspend!
This is a little known bug in Windows 98 that causes the computer to hang when it is in suspend. This is caused, believe it or not, when a drive letter is lower case in the SYSTEM.INI. You can fix this by doing the following:

    - Select Start > Run and type msconfig in the Open: box, then press OK - Select the System.ini tab - Click the + sign next to the (386Enh) section to expand it - Select the line PagingFile= and click Edit - Change the lowercase drive letter to uppercase - Click Apply and OK - When prompted, restart your computer.
