    Outlook and Win 98 (2002 and SP1)

You're my last hope Obi-Wan... I've researched the forums here (as well as the MS "Knowledge" Base) and no one seems to have the exact same problem that we're having (which means that all the solutions posted for similar problems have been tried and don't seem to resolve the issue[s]). We've also loaded the Attachment Options solution that was posted here too.

We've recently upgraded to Office XP on a Win 98 OS. We've been having intermittent POP 3 password prompts (none of the posted solutions have solved our issue) and occasionally get a network password prompt.

Some users have multiple accounts, some don't. The problem occurs for all users. We had no issues when using Office 97 on our Win 98 machines.

    Have I overlooked an obvious solution? Am I <img src=/S/crazy.gif border=0 alt=crazy width=15 height=15> or just <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>?

    Thanks in advance...

From the "coincidence" angle, have you looked at the "Server requires authentication" check-box under Tools|Accounts|Properties? Not very likely that it would now need checking (due to changes in your email server configuration), but possible. HTH

Yes, we've check that (and just about everything else I think ). In doing research on various newsgroups, help sites, etc. I've noticed this problem crops up again and again and rarely is there a response (so thank you for this - I feel better) much less a solution - even on Microsoft forums. It looks like variations of this problem started with Outlook 2000.

    Still desperate,

Re: Outlook and Win 98 (2002 and SP1)

    Progress has been made and I'm not sure if I feel like a hero or a dope <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15>.

One of our password prompt issues was created by Outlook attempting to communicate with IE (6.0 by the way). We run a proxy server that requires user login, so every time you'd fire up Outlook, you'd get a password prompt. We will have to modify our proxy server to allow a "master" login for each user.

Another password prompt issue was caused by Windows Critical Update Notification which checks for an internet connection every *5* minutes...eeeek! (just for the first hour anyway...check out Q224420, very interesting). We have disabled the updates site so users do not download updates on their own, so our poor server was being bombarded with requests to check for a connection, attempting to connect and again issuing a proxy server login notification and being rejected. We've disabled the Critical Updates Notification utility and we're much better today.

I've seen the password prompt issue in a lot of newsgroups and tech sites, I hope my idiocy helps someone else...

    Thanks a bunch...
