Math Symbol in Memo Field (97)

Is there any way to insert a math symbol as part of the text in a memo field? If not, is there any way it can be inserted in the text as a tiny image?

The only easy way I know of to do this is to copy & paste symbols from another program like Word. Use "Insert Symbol" function in Word (Normal Text, not one of the symbol fonts) to insert mathematical or other symbols in Word doc, then copy to memo field in Access. See attached illustration.

I did not think of that. Thanks. I really need a way to do this, even if it's not easy.

You can also copy and paste them from the Windows Character Map

Another possible shortcut is to use Access AutoCorrect Options (Tools menu) to create keyboard shortcuts for those symbols you plan to use on frequent basis. Like the built-in shortcuts where is replaced by copyright symbol

Re: Math Symbol in Memo Field (97)

This works with some symbols but not others. The greek letter mue (mean, looks like a u with tail on left) works just fine. However, the lowercase greek letter sigma (standard deviation, looks like an italiced number six) gets converted to the letter s when pasted. Still, this does help with those letters where it will work.

    Thanks

Re: Math Symbol in Memo Field (97)

I had no problem with lower case sigma symbol, either by using an AutoCorrect shortcut, inserting directly using Unicode character value, or simply pasting into text/memo field. Possibly the version of Office or Windows you are using doesn't support the extended Unicode character set (I'm using XP so really can't test this in Access 97). But if mu worked sigma should too.

Using the Windows Character Map, as suggested by RichUK, is a good way to see what characters you can or cannot use on your system. Character Map is normally found under System Tools or run "CHARMAP" in WIndows Run dialog. Select a font (if working with symbols you want to use a TrueType font such as Arial) and locate symbol. You can then copy and paste. The Character Map also provides the Unicode value for each character. You can use this value to insert symbol into a document directly without having to copy & paste. At insertion point, with NUM LOCK on, hold down the ALT key and use the NUMBER pad keys to type the Unicode character value. Example, to insert lower case Greek sigma you'd type the following Unicode value:
    +03C3
The plus sign must be included (again, use the NUMBER keypad on right of keyboard). Type any letters as normal (the values are apparently in hex, thus the letters). When you release ALT key the symbol will appear in your document. This worked for sigma & other symbols typed in an Access field, even when displayed in a goofy font, as illustrated.

Full Unicode support was introduced with Office 2K/Access 2K so its possible this technique may not work in Access 97.

As MarkD mentions, Unicode support was introduced in Access 2K. In Access 97, you can only use the characters from the "Windows Characters" page. The Greek
