    PC won't start (WinXP home)

When I start the computer I get the blue screen of death with the message

    UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

    Any help greatfully appreciated.

With fingers crossed, I ask: did you have TIME to make an emergency XP boot disk and if so have you tried it yet?

Thanks. I tried the repair option in the KB article but my Compaq shipped with a recovery disk that does a complete system regen and did not ship with a WinXP disk. Naturally, I didn't have a recovery disk. I do now though.

So I take it that means you had to do a complete restore of your system from the Compaq disk? And, since you said you now DO have an emergency disk, the system's booting OK, huh? It's a shame you had to go through all that. Good luck.....
