    Password Recovery (97 & 2000)

Our finance people have forgotten a password to open what they say is a vital workbook. What do you experienced people recommend I go for to retrieve the password in a reasonable time. I have EDC but this said it would take days.

    Hi Paul,
I use Advanced Office 2000 Password Recovery from Elcom Software but you need to pay for the registered version to do passwords more than 4 characters long. Bear in mind that if it's a secure password it can take a long time no matter what you use!

Is the password protecting the workbook or the VBA code?

If it's the workbook, look at this post from cri- it works a treat in Excel 2000, so has not been patched since Excel 97.

    Geoff,
I get the impression it's the password to open the workbook, not a protection from changes password.

    Rory,

Sorry, a third option I had not thought of.

    And the most obvious.

Try this Russian password cracker site. You don't have it from me.

    Re: Password Recovery (97 & 2000)

Thanks Greg, the problem in question is a password on open protection, so rory's link looks to be my option. The code you highlighted is interesting and I/m going to try it on one of my own sheets.

To anonymous - thank you for this, in the end it goes back to the same product rory recommended, so I'm getting the message.

Rory, I have now obtained the software and it worked a treat. Many thanks for your lead.
