    'Msg 'Connecting to 127.0.0.1' (IE6)

I apologise for the sketchiness of the information, but I am attempting to do some remote user diagnostics (read that any way you like)!.

On a usually-working IE6 on Windows 98 SE, when you type in a URL of a website, IE6 now gives the above message at the bottom left, for no apparent reason, and does not go to the requested website.

Has anyone come across this, and/or could explain why it wants to go to the machine itself? I can't find anything on TechNet about it...

Is this machine not yours? It sounds like the user is using a "loopback" address (127.0.0.1) in a Hosts file to redirect certain sites back to the local machine.

Is there a Hosts file on the machine? Do a Search for Hosts (no extension) and open it in WordPad (or NotePad if able). Look for an entry like this:

    127.0.0.1 www.website.com

Where "website" is the site you are trying to reach.

Thanks for your resaponse! Yes, it's "mine" - but 120 miles away, except at weekends! No Hosts file, and the problem did not depend on the URL which was entered - it went wrong on all URLs.

Even though a reboot was attempted at the time, it didn't fix the problem.

However, I'm told that "leaving it off overnight" and then powering on again appears to have made the problem go away - perhaps for the present.

    I just love these sort of random problems; don't you? <img src=/S/igiveup.gif border=0 alt=igiveup width=31 height=23>

You'd get the behaviour you describe if you had configured the Proxy settings to use the loopback address as a proxy server.

    Hi John:
This is put in by Ad-subtract for autodial. However, I'm surprised you don't have a hosts file. Mine says:
"127.0.0.1 AdSubtract # Added by AdSubtract for auto-dial."

While I'm not sure, it's possible that you're having trouble using Ad-subtract's proxy at times. I know I have that problem sometimes & so I don't load it when I know were I'm going (like the Lounge).

    Hope this helps.
