Pasting an Excel Chart into a Word Document (Word 2002)

I have a word document that I create every month in which I paste an excel spreadsheet. I have always done a CTRL-C to copy it and then CTRL-V to paste the chart into the document. Over the past three days I have been trying the same procedure, but every time I paste the chart Word crashes. I have looked at Microsofts site, through the archives of Woody's newsletters, and Free Answers and cannot find any articles on this problem. I will tell you that I loaded Office SP-1 and some other addins (had to load SP-1 to get the addins I wanted) right before I started creating this document. I have tried the paste special function and get the same results. I have done a detect and repaire and a reinstall from the set up CD as well, no change. My last resort is to completely uninstall and reinstall, but thought I would post something first to see if anyone had any insight into this problem. Thanks, Nella Parrish

    Nella,

I don't know about your problem.

One thing you could try is to insert directly into Word. Insert, Files- select the worksheet you're inserting from. You can choose which worksheet, and which part of the worksheet you want to insert.

Or you could try to insert a chart directly. Insert, Object, allows you to insert a chart directly. You can format it much like a small spreadsheet embedded in Word (which it is).

Sorry though I can't address your problem directly.

Re: Pasting an Excel Chart into a Word Document (Word 2002)

    Hi Nella:
The first thing I would do is try to clean up the temp files that will be left around after a crash.
Do the following, after closing all open applications:
    1. Click an empty spot on the taskbar & press F3.
    2. Make sure that the look in box is your primary hard drive & that "include subfolders" is ticked.
    3. Type *.tmp;~*.do?;~*.wbk in the "named" box & search.
    4. Then delete all these temp files.

It may also be that the workbook/spreadsheet has become corrupt. Create a new small spreadsheet & try a copy & paste to see if this corrects the problem.

You also may have an add-in or a corrupt normal.dot that is causing problems. Try these steps:

    1. Start Word from Start/Run menu & type

    winword.exe /a

This starts Word without any add-ins, global templates, or normal.dot. Does the problem go away? If so, then:

    2. Close Word.
    3. Use Windows Find to locate normal.dot
    a. Click an empty spot on the taskbar & press F3.
    b. Make sure that the look in box is your primary hard drive & that "include subfolders" is ticked.
    c. Type normal.dot in the "named" box & search.

    4. Right click normal.dot & rename to normal.old
    5. Restart Word
If the problem goes away, you had a corrupt normal.dot. If not:
    6. Use Find again to locate your Word startup folder by typing "startup" (no quotes) in step c. above.
    7. Drag everything out of the folder onto your desktop & restart Word. If this corrects the problem, it's one of the add-ins that you dragged onto your desktop.
    8. Close Word & drag each add-in back into the startup folder, one at a time, opening Word & testing after each one, & then closing Word. When the problem reappears, you will have located the add-in causing the problem.
