    Where do you store the function ?
    If it is in the module behind a form, you better put it in a regular module or you can leave it in the form module and make it Public with the statement :
    Public Function buildSQL()

    What is CommandBarComboBox(filterType)? Ordinarily if you refer to the members of a menubar collection, you use an index, either the ordinal or the name/caption of the control, along with a specifier for the commandbar itself. If you haven't set a reference to the commandbar, Access doesn't know what commandbar you want to address, let alone which combobox. For instance ...

    Dim cbo As CommandBarComboBox
    Dim cbr As CommandBar

    Set cbr = CommandBars(strMenuName)
    Set cbo = cbr.Controls(strCBOName)

    Then you can refer to cbo.ListIndex to get the selected value.
