Compare Documents breaks in large docs (Word 2000, NT)

When I run Track Changes / Compare Documents on two versions of a lengthy doc file (above 30 pages or so), the file compare breaks at a random place. It acts as if all text beyond the break point is different in the two versions even though much is still the same. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to where it breaks. I can successfully compare the same two documents in Word 97 and it works fine. The process breaks on both NT and 2000.

This same problem occurs in every doc file I try to compare (we've seen this in 200 files). I'm not sure what version of Word the files were originally created in, or what version the changes are being made in since someone else is making them.

If this issue isn't an easy fix, I'd appreciate recommendations for a file compare tool that would work on Windows machines with Word or RTF files.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

Keeping a copy of Word97 around for this is the cheapest way... the only currently supported third party product of which I am aware is DeltaView. If you can find a copy of CompareRite on eBay or somewhere, it's reasonably good, but it has been discontinued and probably is not really Word 2000-aware (for example, it might choke on a nested table).

I haven't heard whether Word 2002 fixes this problem (I've heard more about the new gotchas it introduced). Can anyone tell us?

Thanks for the info. We should be able to keep a copy of Word 97 around. In the meantime I'll take a look at DeltaView, since this appears to be a "feature" <img src=/S/crazy.gif border=0 alt=crazy width=15 height=15>.

    Thanks again!
