    configmg error on startup

i recently purchased a new PC - Athlon XP 2000 - with Windows 98 loaded. I put Windows 98 SE on it (an upgrade CD). I now get a CONFIGMG windows protection error on startup, altho not every time. After a restart the PC displays the menu, and goes into safe mode unless I stop it and choose Normal. I have searched for CONFIGMG files on the hard disk and found none. I checked the MS knowledge base article, and tried disabling the L2 cache in cmos - no change. the other options did not apply to my PC - I had the guy who built the PC take a look too. Any other suggestions? What will happen if I install Win98 SE back over the top? will it cause more problems than it fixes? I already don't like the fact that you just put the CD in and it doesn't ask you anything - just blindly does its job.

Thank you heaps. I gave a printout of the URL to my computer supplier, and the problem is now fixed. Much appreciated. This is a great resource.
