Re-using old PCs

    *** This post is probably UK-specific ***

The company I work for has just carried out a W2K/O2K rollout and a number of machines have been replaced . Thus, there is a collection of redundant IBM P-II ~350's sitting around . I've heard it said that under new government legislation, the company cannot offer these old machines to staff as they are liable for tax on them??!!!? (not that I'd be looking for one anyway). They can't give them away to local charities (youth clubs, schools, etc.) as they would also need to provide 3rd Party Liability cover at the same time???!!!!? . Even the option of throwing them away , albeit an extremely undesirable solution, is out of the question owing to toxic materials contained therein.

    What's the answer?

I remember an article in one of the UK PC Magazines about an organisation that was acting as a broker to pass this sort of thing onto charities in a way that protected the original owner. I can't find the article now.

You wouldn't happen to have a company operated, Children's Daycare would you?

Also... old PCs make wonderful door stops, paper weights, and flower pot stands...

    Re: Re-using old PCs

Oh cheers for the links guys . I'll pass the info on to the Powers That Be at my end. Not that it'll do much good I suspect - at times it seems it's not company policy to do something for the good of someone else, unless there's a buck in it.

They're probably reading this posting too, but then at times there's nothing I'd like to be doing more than teaching kids how to use computers, somewhere else in the world. Hmmmmmmmm..........

What if you pack them in the boxes the new computers came in and leave them out on the loading docks? Maybe someone will come by and take them off your hands.

If you want to experiment with what some have done with old Macs - have a look here. Would have thought this was right up your ... er, stream, Fish!
