    Today's Date in a Filter (Project 98)

    I want to make a filter that compares a task's finish date to TODAYS DATE. Is there a variable that is the system date?

    I know that I can create a filter, and prompt the user to enter a date on the fly for comparison, but there ought to be a way to always compare to Todays' Date.

    Regards,
    Michael Roland

    First, a question. I am not sure what you are doing, but why would you want to compare a tasks finish date (Planned or baseline) to the current system date? Using a schedule, I can't see what this will tell you other then how the finish date is as compared to the current date. This does not tell you if the task is behind or ahead of schedule. Perhaps a baseline comparison / looking at float could accomplish this. However, I digress and I am sure you have your reasons for the comparison you are doing.

    To answer your question, using a filter, I am unsure if there is a way to compare to a system date using the standard filter process. At least I don't know of a way to do this within the filter. You could write some code to get the system date and pass that date back to a field in project (i.e., Date1 or other) and compare the data to that.

    Unfortunately, I would be stuck doing the comparison as you are by inputting the current date when asked for the data in the filter. That doesn't mean it can't be done.

    Anyone else have any ideas? <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

    I played with this in Project 2K - but I see no reason why it wouldn't work in 98.
    First create a custom field.
    I inserted a new field and chose the Date 1 field.
    Right Click on the field colum and select Customize fields
    Under Custom Attributes - click on the Formula button.
    in the Edit Formula dialog box type
    Now()
    or you could use the function button to insert the Now function
    For ease of use I renamed the field to Now.

    This way you can use that custom field when building your filter.

    Very neat. I was thinking along these lines as well. The only issue with using the customized date field is that it does not appear to work on Summary Tasks where as a standard filter, i.e, select all dates after the date entered, does.

    I might be missing something here but you can type in 'today' as a date for all the standard filters and it seems to work fine (Project 2K)

    First, I know you cannot create formulas in custom fields in the 98 version... <img src=/S/bwaaah.gif border=0 alt=bwaaah width=123 height=15>
    Second, I too am not sure what is accomplished by the comparison... I do know of a macro/code that can filter tasks from today's date and say the next two weeks without having to constantly enter those dates in the filter field.

    Sub FilterNext2Wks()
    FilterApply Name:="Date &Range...", value1:=Date, value2:=Date + 14

    End Sub

    If you need to change the date range for more or less then 2 weeks, change the 14 to another number.
