Sent mail remains in Outbox (2002 SP-1)

I'm running Outlook on Windows XP in an IBM ThinkPad. When I click Send/Receive almost always one piece of mail changes from italics to regular type and remains in the Outbox. Sometimes it actually goes to the recipient; sometimes it doesn't. So I open the email, click Send again and dial up again to be sure the recipient gets it. This time it usually goes to the Sent Box. Most of the time recipients get two copies of my mail when I repeat the Send operation. This change from italics to regular type for one email in the group of emails in the Outbox also occurs if I so much as open the Outbox to peek at what's sitting there waiting to be sent. I've tried removing Office XP for Small Business and reinstalling it; run chkdsk; run a full virus scan; talked with my ISP; talked with IBM; posted in MS discussion forum; even removed the fax console which came with Windows XP. Nothing stops this strange behavior and so far no one has any solution. Has anyone in the Lounge run across this problem or know how to solve it?

I too have an IBM ThinkPad with Windows XP and Outlook 2002, and like you, find the habit of Outlook not sending e-mails from the Outbox after you've clicked the Outbox to peek at what's waiting to go very annoying .

Haven't found a solution unfortunately so just recording the common problem.

I can add that the same behaviour occurred under Windows 2000 with Outlook 2002.

I've also found that if an e-mail is in the process of being sent at the time of clicking the Outbox, the sending of the e-mail that is highlighted when the Outbox is selected appears to be aborted. Certainly any e-mail not yet in the process of being sent is tagged NOT TO BE SENT if it is highlighted on selecting the Outbox

Advice of a solution to this annoying behaviour would be appreciated .

This is a known issue in OLXP, with no fix, but a work around. It can happen when you have delivery set to a pst file - which is what happens unless you use a mail server like Exchange - and have set the preference to save a copy of sent items in the folder from which they were sent. To turn this off: Tools Menu | Options, Preference Tab, Email Options, Advanced. Uncheck the checkbox and save settings. I'd exit OL and go back in, but I don't know if you have to do so.

Hurray! I glad someone else is aware of this problem. Is the box you mean, "In folders other than the Inbox, save replies with original message"? If so, that box is unchecked in my Outlook already. But thanks anyway. Perhaps a fix will not be long in coming.
