    Font size (A97/SR2)

Can anyone shed some light on this problem?
I've got some reports which print fine on our network printers (HP 4050 laser and 720c ink jet), but on a user site they have the last letter of labels, e.g. the report title, chopped off. They are using a HP4050 as well, but they are on NT4, whereas I'm using 2000 and XP Pro. I managed to recreate the problem by setting my default printer to my Adobe Distiller driver
All my labels are auto sized, i.e. select all controls on the report, and double click on the sizing handle. If I manually resize the label control, I can solve the problem, but I've got a LOT of reports, so the thought of manually tweaking each label <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>

Sounds like a difference in drivers on the several machines. Their drivers may be older than yours.

Another possible source of problem is that they don't have the same font that you do, and Windows is substituting a font that is wider than yours.

    Thanks for the response Makr.
I do try to avoid using any uncommon fonts, so it's usually Arial or Times Roman which I hope are there <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

    Thanks for the response Charlotte
I hadn't appreciated that the driver versions would have such an effect on the font size.

This effect is really a major pain for any labels when you use the "auto-size" by double clicking.
Do you know of anyway to hook into the size calculation that a double click initiates <img src=/S/question.gif border=0 alt=question width=15 height=15>
    - wondering if I could tweak the values a bit to increase the size. I reckon I could write something that goes through each control on the report, ooh but I'd have to check for overlaps <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15>
    Alternatively maybe I could decrease the font size <img src=/S/thinks.gif border=0 alt=thinks width=15 height=15>

    Re: Font size (A97/SR2)

It isn't so much that they affect the font size as they handle the print job differently in some ways. Printer drivers can trip you up in a bunch of different ways because you can't be sure all the settings on the other machine are identical. There are obscure settings on inkjet printers, for example, that can affect the output dramatically.

I'm not sure what you mean by "auto-size" by double clicking. The only place where I've ever used that is in a table or query, not in a report.

    Re: Font size (A97/SR2)

Sorry don't know the 'proper' name for it.
e.g. if I put a label on a report, change the font size, then position the pointer to get the resize arrows, then double click, the size of the control changes to match the new size of the label text.
Sort of similar to the auto-sizing of columns in tables and queries, but it changes the control height and width. It's also confusing that with text boxes, if the new font size is bigger, the control will grow, but if the size is smaller, it doesn't <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>

Did you get this resolved? I've been on vacation for a few days, which is why I didn't respond before. The label will resize to match the text in it, but labels on reports can be tricky. I make it a point to make my labels large enough so that the entire text is visible in design view, which is not necessarily the case when you autosize the thing. That usually takes care of any truncated labels. You could select all the label controls by holding down the ctrl key and selecting each label. Then right click any of the selected controls and select Size-->To Fit from the context menu. While they're still selected, you could hold down the Shift key and use the right arrow to make them all a bit wider for insurance.

    Re: Font size (A97/SR2)

    No luck I'm afraid <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>
I knocked together a test report with different fonts (Arial, Tahoma, Times New Roman) and different sizes (8, 10, 12, 14 and 16), and asked them to print it on their PC.
Result is the 8 point in each font is chopped, one or more letters, the larger font sizes look fine. Of course on my PC + printer is fine <img src=/S/bananas.gif border=0 alt=bananas width=33 height=35>

Your point about the drivers got me thinking, so I checked with them. Seems they are on NT4, but they've had problems with drivers so their IT has installed the 4100 series driver on all machines, even though their office has a 4050
    - checked the HP web site and there is a recent (May) driver for NT4 and 4050, so I've asked them to download and install
    - I'll let you know if this sorts the problem out [crossfinger]

Yeap in future I think I'm going to have to try making the label boxes bigger, but it's a real pain, especially when you accidently double click <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15>
