At a guess, you have installed then uninstalled a graphics program which took over your file associations. You now don't have any.

Quick way for the obvious files:
    Right_mouse a graphics file (e.g. .jpg) > Open with... > Choose program...
This will take you to the "Open with" list of installed programs. Select the one of your choice (I use Photo Editor) and make sure you tick the "Always use this program.." option.
If you don't have and specific graphics prog installed, I suggest Photo Editor for .png's and .jpg's and MS Paint for .bmp's and .gif's - from memory they are the default selections.

The other route is via Explorer:
Tools > Options > File Types and manually enter the info.

    • File Type: gif x.gif (11.3 KB, 0 views)

Photo Editor is part of the optional components of Office.
Right_click a .jpg and select "Open With..." and see what your system offers you - you will probably be offered Imaging, IE and Paint. It's up to you to decide which you want to use to have as a default editor.
Once you've decide, follow what I suggest above - I hoping you'll find your thumbnails will return.
