Start Menu - Controling exanded list (1)

This is not a serious issue, but one that has been nagging at me for some time. My start menu is configured so that it shows the most recently accessed programs (when you select Programs from the start menu) and a down arrow to expand the list to see everything. Usually this gives me a fairly tight, short list of my most often used programs. However, after spending a Saturday poking around in many programs I rarely use, they now show up along with my "REAL" frequently used programs. Is there any way to control what shows up on this initial list (before selecting the down arrow)?

If it is like W2K, you have selected 'Use Personailzed Menus' in your Taskbar/Start Menu properties.

Leif, thanks for the quick response. Yes, I have selected Use Personalized Menus and I find this feature very useful, especially before I did all the looking around and executing many programs I normally don't use. This caused them to appear (before the expansion) on my personalized menu and I am trying to figure out how to get back to where only my frequently used programs appear before choosing the down arrow to expand. It is difficult to explain what I mean. I have tried turning off the personalized menu option and turning it back on, hoping it might forget or learn again which applications I use most often. Does this explanation make any sense at all? Thanks.

Ah - in Taskbar/Start Menu Properties > Advanced, do you have an option to "Scroll the Programs menu"?

Yes, I do. It was not checked. I tried checking that option, but I don't see any change. I'm not sure what it does.

Sorry - that was a red herring. <img src=/S/crazy.gif border=0 alt=crazy width=15 height=15> I was mixing up what it does with personalized menus.
(If your list of programs leading off the Start menu exceeds the height of your display, it will either scroll or expand into another column, depending on this option.)

If you have TweakUI, got to "TaskBar, XP Start Menu". You can now clear the check mark for those that you do NOT EVER to listed in the recent "Programs" area of your Start Menu.

If you do NOT have TweakUI, goto http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/dow...s/powertoys.asp to download the Powertoys.

i don't think this covers the problem... although instead of using tweak, you can right click and unpin.

To solve the of the smart menus showing programs she doesn't normally used, the easiest fix is to reset the menu data. Then nothing will show and programs will be added as they are used.

Mary, your answer seems like it may be what I was looking for. Right-click where to choose unpin (I haven't seen that option). Also, how do you reset the menu data? Thanks.

right click on the icon you want removed on the left side of the winxp start menu. you can clear the list completely from the task bar and start menu properties (control panel) - look on the general tab.

if the problem is with the all programs menus expanding to show all the shortcuts, there is a way to reset the useage, but i can't locate the option - it might only be an option if using xlassic start menu.
