Removing Template Style Headings? (Word 97)

While I'm creating a template (with 4 heading levels), MSW took it upon its self to add Heading 5 and Heading 6. When I try to remove them from the Style Organizer, it wont let me delete them; " The build in style Heading 5 can not be deleted". How do I get rid of these extra heading levels for my template? <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>- Jody

    Hi Jody & Stuart:
I've tried it. After you save as .RTF, just open it in a text editor & each style name is listed between culry brackets {}, along with other characters). If you delete everything between 2 curly brackets, including the brackets themselves, the styles are deleted.

    Phil (and Stuart),

The original question referred to Heading styles in a template style sheet.

The RTF technique works fine for deleting Heading styles for a document style sheet, but so far as I am aware there is not a way to save a template as RTF, and so the same technique can not be applied to Heading styles in a template style sheet. Am I missing a trick here?

    Hi Robin:
You're right, I missed that. However, you can still do it, but there are more steps.
    1. Create a document based on the template.
    2. Save it as .RTF.
    3. Open it in Notepad & remove the style headers that you wish (they're contained between curly brackets & start with s#; i.e. s number)
    4. Save the document & open it in Word. It will no longer have the styles.
    5. Save it as a template.
    6. Copy your macros, autotext, & toolbars (but not styles) from your old template. You also need to copy shortcut keys.

    Cheers,

Thanks for noticing that it was a template... I had tried it, and it didn't work. Being messy as this solution is, I received a message from someone suggesting that I ".hide" the style. That worked great for my purposes! That way, I can create styles that my macros implement but my users aren't able to use from the drop down menu. - Jody
