    MEDIA PLAYER

Can anyone tell me if I have made a fatal mistake with Windows Media Player. Using Win98 SE I have upgraded WMP to version 7.01.00.3055. Now files (.wmv) & (.avi) which used to play okay ask to apply for the codec server (via the 'net) and I still don't get the video images, only the WMP visual images.
Should I bin WMP for something else (if so, what?) or is there any easy fix?
    Thanks

I have the same version of Media Player on Windows 98SE. Can you supply a pointer to a file which you can't play.

One file is a comedy thing about a loud mouth American kid selling from a beer stand. The video did work before, now it won't. the extension is hidden, but the properties show the extension as WMV.

    Re: MEDIA PLAYER

wmv is a proprietary Microsoft media player extension, so it is hardly likely that an alternative product is going to be able to play it if the Microsoft one can't.

Are you able to provide a pointer to any online media that no longer works?

    Willow ~

Go to DivX and download DivX 5.0.2 on middle of right-hand page. This will allow you to play any .avis.

Also, I have a buddy who just came back from Australia who said it is winter there. Is that true? Cold? Snow?? <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/flags/australia.gif>

    Re: MEDIA PLAYER

If I were you I'd uninstall Media Player and not get Real Player either. I was pointed by a poster on here to a player named WinAmp It's small in size and in my humble opinion, much, much better than the other two put together.

Give it a try, I don't think you'll be sorry.

    Re: MEDIA PLAYER

Except that Winamp won't play video files of any kind. It's design limits it to audio files only.

There are alternatives, such as UltraPlayer, which is capable of playing several formats and is very like WinAmp. Another all-in-one alternative is MusicMatch Jukebox, which has matured quite nicely. The video features aren't touted quite as loudly as the MP3/audio but they're there!

Have you tried removing it to see if life is normal again? The old media player is still on your hard drive, if memory serves - search for MPLAYER2.EXE using Find - Files and Folders. I also posted further down in this thread with a few recommendations as to media players you can test drive.

You know what? You're right and I just noticed that. Most video sites I went to reguire Windows Media Player. I can't find one place to watch videos on the Web with any of the players that you mentioned. Do you know of any?

    Re: MEDIA PLAYER

iI have a player that came with my sound card: Creative SB Live + MP3 or something to that effect and I have one that came with InfranView. Will one of those work on the places that ask for WMP?

    Re: MEDIA PLAYER

Thanks for all the replies! I reckon it must be an error in that version of WMP - I uninstalled it (just before I saw your post Mark) and reverted to the hard drive version - bingo, files work. I'm experimenting with quickplayer at the moment, and will look at the other options suggested as well

    Re: MEDIA PLAYER

I believe the PlayCenter that comes with Creative's sound cards will work with different types of media. I don't have it installed at the moment so I can't say for certain. IrfanView, I believe, requires Windows Media to be installed first, but should play back most media file types. I can't verify that to be true or not - I use ACDSee 3 for my preview needs. I think IrfanView is intended for use the same way - not to play the files back, but to preview and work with them. However, if it works, it works, right?

UltraPlayer is a free download, and MusicMatch - the paid version - is a paltry $20 US. If you are looking for a decent reference on Media players and management, head over to Connected @Home Magazine Online and check out some of their information.

Yep, sure is winter mate. I'm in the Australian Capital Territory - very pretty, but very cold (-6C last night). Don't get much snow here, but the mountains around us often do. Days get up to about 13C so not too bad (and by Xmas we'll be coping with summer 40C heat - I hope!)

    Re: MEDIA PLAYER

If you installed one of the other players, they would be able to play the content back. The process of online video is in two parts: the codec - the software that encodes/decodes the media, and the player. The codecs are installed separately from the player and aren't usually removed if you uninstall it.

So, if you were to install MusicMatch, for example, it would tell Windows to associate it with all the media files, and would automatically pop up when you played one - because the codec needed toplay it back was already present, thanks to another media player installing it in advance. Does that help?

    Re: MEDIA PLAYER

Scratch quickplayer...it seems to cause all sorts of conflicts (Nero for one).
Winamp looks good, and I will give Divx a go.
(Hey - I know I ask a lot of questions, but I'm trying to give some feedback..how do I loose the "newbie" tag - I feeling a bit inferior LOL)
