    Repair damaged NT Installation

    Hi,

A user's NT installation was damaged when they pulled the plug without shutdown.
A Repair got the PC working, but many applications like MSWord, WinZip etc. aren't working properly.

My Q. is - does the NT repair EVER work fully?
Are you always better off doing a complete reinstall when these kind of things happen?

    Ta,

    m.q.

Do they ever work? Sure. Appears as though in this case, the repair only got you into the operating system and nothing more. Is this NT or 2000? Same basic kernel, vastly different products.

When I get the operating system working functionally, with all installed applications, I always make it a point to back up the "System State" using the Windows Backup tool. Outside of that nice little feature I find it largely useless unless I'm in a pinch.

I think what I am trying to say here is, dont' count on the repair to fix it - certainly, not every time anyway. It's a great fail-safe but it too relies on software, and if that software get corrupted, there's nothing that can be done. Nothing beats a known working backup somewhere for times like this.

    Re: Repair damaged NT Installation

May years ago I attended a user group demo where an IBM guy showed off the stability of OS/2 by pulling the power cord. The system restarted flawlessly, but someone in the audience complained that the unsaved changes in MS Word were lost. Meanwhile, the guy showing Windows 95 just kept his mouth shut!
