    CD ROM not recognized

I am trying to format a hard drive and install WIN 98. I am using a WIN 98 Startup disk to boot the system. However the cd-rom drive is not recognized and the cd-rom drivers are not installed. The system either had a virus or a major corruption as most of the exe files will not run. When I do start the system in WIN 98, the cd-rom drive is recognized. The cd drive is Hitachi DVD model GD-5000. HELP.

    Re: CD ROM not recognized

When you formated the drive you threw away <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15> the needed drivers. If you have a Windows98 syartup disk you may be able to use the default CD drivers that are on it. If not you will need to copy the needed "Real mode" drivers for your CD.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I have not formatted the drive yet. Am trying. I try to start the computer with a WIN 98 Startup disk but it does not find the cd rom device and does not load the drivers. How do I find and install the "real mode" drivers for the cd drive?

    Re: CD ROM not recognized

Being a DVD you may have problems. You need to go to the OEM of the DVD and see if they have any for download.

When you boot to the Win98 startup disk, are you selecting "with CD support"?

Yes, I am selecting WITH CD ROM SUPPORT. If I can find a driver for my DVD, how do I get it on the STARTUP disk and activated?

Is either the CD-ROM or the DVD-ROM being seen in the BIOS POST (the initial system test) when you first turn the machine on?

    Re: CD ROM not recognized

When I turn the system on "normally", the startup messages says that the Primary and Secondary Master and Slave were not detected. However, on the next "page" it shows the hard drive and the CD drive. And I can use the cd drive. When I start the system with the WIN 98 Startup disk, I get a message saying that no cd drive was detected and then another message saying that the cd drivers were not installed.

    Re: CD ROM not recognized

This is some weird stuff going on here.

Try getting into the BIOS setup and setting everything back to default or factory setup. Then try an auto-detect of devices (usually an option straight off the main menu in the BIOS setup). It almost certainly won't see the CD/DVD device but doing this will clear out any old infomation.

    Re: CD ROM not recognized

First of all, you and Fish are talking about what seems to me to be TWO separate problems. When you start the system "normally" as you called it, and you get the initial messages about the Primary and Secondary NOT DETECTED, makes me wonder if you have a plugin IDE card in the machine, which would not be recognized by the BIOS. Then, when that card initializes, it would cause the hard drive(s) to be properly installed. I don't know if this is of concern to you YET.

What you STILL need is a boot diskette that has a CD driver on it with the proper Autoexec.Bat to load that driver. I have a Win98 boot diskette that works on 99.99% of the systems I use it on. If you will allow me to send you TWO files to your email address, I'll send you a CD driver and an Autoexec.Bat that you could copy to your boot disk. If you want to do this, I would make a copy of your boot diskette first, so we don't burn your bridges, so to speak.

On the other hand, I have never tried this with a DVD DRIVE, so it may not work and you'd be wasting your time. It would be (I guess) more effecient if you could locate a real-mode driver for YOUR drive (usually a .SYS file), and add it to your boot disk. Post back here if you want me to email those two files. Don't put your email address in the post, just for your privacy sake. We can deal with that later.

If you look in http://www.driverguide.com, with a bit of searching you'll find the DOS drivers for your '5000. At the membership login, you'll be prompted for a user name and password. There's no charge, but you have to register to get the DRIVERS, that's ALL.

I'm sure you've solved the problem one way or another by now..... but I had a similar problem and in the end......
My computer was shipped to me with the Master/Slave cables reversed.... So, I had to switch the drives and plug the cables back in. - JD
