Quickly reduce file size of docs with pictures (2000)

In Word 2000, when you insert a bitmaps into a document, the file size gets very large. To work around this:
1. Click on the photo
2. Cut it
3. Go to Edit/Paste Special and select Picture
4. Click OK
5. Click on the photo again
6. Cut it
7. Go to Edit/Paste Special and select JPEG (The first time you cut it, JPEG was not an available option)
8. Click OK

The file size will drop dramatically.

I just tried this in Word 97... sadly, it didn't work... happy for the W2K users out there who can use it though
Good tip

However, you might get some reduction. I don't have W97 available to me right now - I'll have to try it tomorrow at work, but I just tried this in Word 2000. Paste my (smallish) bit map into document - file size 27K. Cut and paste back as picture - file size 24.5 K. Cut again and paste back as JPEG - file size 23K. So if W97 will at least do that, there is merit in pasting it back in as a 'picture'.

Hi Hetty:
I get different results. I paste a bitmap; the size went from 26 to 93Kb. I cut & paste as a picture; it went to 63Kb (or 67, I forget). I cut & paste as a JPEG and the size goes up. Hmmm.

I would love it if this worked - but I found that the file grew after step 4 and then grew again after step 8. I am using Word 2002. Let's find another way.

I hope we can find another way - I'm looking to get a 10mb document down to under 2mb.

I just tried it again (Word 2000). This time I went from 73KB to 605KB to 53KB. I'm not sure what's happening...gremlins.

I find the quality of JPEGs pretty lousy for most purposes, unless they were JPEGs to start with.

The larger bitmaps in Word documents are embedded or "device independent" bitmaps. True native pictures are readily compressed, often better compressed with less loss than other formats.

To see what kind you have, toggle the viewing of field codes using Alt+F9. If your pictures turn into codes similar to {

Re: Quickly reduce file size of docs with pictures (2000)

I am sorry that my suggested method is not providing the results that many have hoped for. Our PR dept who furnishes our photos will only provide bitmaps. We regularly produce documents that are 30 - 40mb but for our purposes the pictures are not the primary focus of the document so they tend to be quite small in size 2.5 inch by 2.5 inch, but there are a number of them. But by using the method I listed earlier I am able to reduce a document from 23mb to 371kb.
