File Open dialog (VB6 / VBA Office 2000)

    Hi,

Does anyone know of a good File Open dialog box, which might work just like an MS standard FileOpen, but which:
    a. Showed a preview of any image files
    b. Was resizable

    TIA

    You could build your own, you know. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

    Charlotte,

I probably could build my own. I've started along the path.

The constraint is that it must look exactly like the MS open dialog (but have additions).

I don't know, for a start, how to examine all drives. And how to show the icons in the dropdown box. And I don't have any confidence that my code (probably using a "dir" command") would work anywhere near as efficiently as the MS dialog box.

I could probably do something simple within a budget.

But I suspect that this has been done before, much better than I could do, for a cost far smaller than I could do it for.

Perhaps you can find something at http://www.codeguru.com, though it's mostly C-orientated.

And maybe you can find something here.

Geoff, looks like Arkadiy Olovyannikov has what you want. I've not tried it. Please let us know if it works. Sounds too good to be true. --Sam

    Sammy,

It looks good. But I had a couple of problems.

    1. Some things just froze up
    2. Only a bit of the picture was shown, with scrollbars.

Because it was all done with API calls, which I'm not at all familiar with, I could not figure out what to tweak.

    Put thanks for the pointer.

Is criterion "a" met by the Insert Picture From File dialog? I saw a hack (maybe in MS Office Solutions Mag, or whatever it is called now) to change the title of a built-in dialog, but unfortunately I don't think it would change the button caption. Hmmm...

A cut-down version of that would be better than what we have. But I wouldn't want the sidebar or some of the controls; it seems I can't display preview and details.

    Thanks though.

I did find something at http://www.mvps.org/ccrp/controls/ccrpfiledlg6.htm which might be OK, I'll have to check it out at home though.

Re: File Open dialog (VB6 / VBA Office 2000)

    Hans,

That second reference was good. I hadn't even remembered the DriveList, DirList and FileList controls <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>. It certainly makes the job of building much easier than I thought it might be.

The one problem for me is that I no longer have the ability to switch to a "detail" view, as I can in the Common Dialog FileOpen. It's sometimes quite useful to see attributes of a file, not just the name- the FileList control does not give me that ability.

    <Edited later>

I thought I was onto something when I added the component called just "Cdlg" (REPCDLG.OCX)- it looked exactly right. It apparently ships with VB6 Enterprise- but I can't get it to do anything. Google couldn't tell me anything except that it was shipped with VB6.
