Defining parallel tasks in multiple MSP schedules (MSP 2000)

I want the same 'physical' activity to be shared across two MSP 2000 schedules, however, the method I have used is not very robust because the start-start constraint is only observed when the 'slave' task is moved.

    Please help, Justin Siedle.

    Justin,

It sounds as if you linked a particular task in one project to another with a start to start relationship. However, are you just trying to link the task start / finish dates or the resource pools as well between the two projects.

I am not sure I understand what you mean by "shared across two MSP projects". What is the purpose of sharing the task? Does the task drive any data in one or both projects? What is the link from the two projects to the task to be shared?

I guess you could create a third project with the "shared" task with a must start and must finish by date and link the other projects to this task. You will still need to define when will the shared task will start and end and the relationship (SS, SF...) as compared to the other projects.
This may help to answer you question as the shared task will drive part or all of the other schedules.

If this doesn't help, please provide some more information on what you are trying to do.

    Good Luck.
    Regards,

    Gary

    Gary

Our systems require a single MSP schedule per contract, however, there are some tasks that are funded by multiple projects. Therefore, I want to represent these 'shared' tasks in each contract such that the start and finish times will be the same and the assigned resources time can be split between the sponsor contracts.

    Is this clearer?

    Thanks for your help.

    Justin.

    Justin,

Are you maintaining separate schedules or consolidating them into one schedule?

If you are maintaining multiple schedules, you could create one new schedule that has the shared tasks and link all of the other schedules to the shared task schedule. However, I still think you may have problems with the predecessor and successor links. (i.e, What drives the shared tasks and how will the shared tasks drive the other schedules?)

If you bring all of the data together into one schedule then you would not have to worry about the links and updates not working as you stated in your original post.

Since you truly need shared tasks, I would import all of the schedules into one master schedule and drive it from there. Don't know if this helps. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Good Luck
