Numbers in Excel (Office97 SR2)

    Hi All

I have a spreadsheet in which the first column is numbers. I want the number to run consecutively but when I sort them a few at the top (around 20) will not sort in the correct place. When I copy and paste it appears some cells are text and some numbers. I have tried to format them to be the same and also done a paste special with values only but to no avail. Can someone give me an idea of why this is and how it might be solved

    Thanks in advance

This sometimes happens, especially if the data were imported from another program. There are several methods to repair this. One of the simplest is:

Enter 1 in an empty cell.

Select and copy this cell.

Select the range with the problem cells.

Select Edit/Paste Special...

Select the Multiply option and click OK.

You can now erase the cell with 1 in it.[/list]This should convert text to numeric.

    Hi Hans,

An even easier way is to:
    . Copy a blank cell,
    . Select Edit|Paste Special
. Select the Add option and click OK.

    Cheers
