Pretty sure it's C:WINDOWS, but why not hit the F3 key and make sure? Click on the taskbar first, then F3.

On the CD....I can't seem to locate it on the CD. I am trying to install the 98 version as the XP version had the transparency tool culled.

    Doh! Just re-read the post.

I have it in WIN98_46.CAB on the install media. That's the EXE - do a search on the CD for the other pieces (.CHM, .CNT and .HLP).

Morel likely it's your search criteria. Put MSPAINT in the Containing Text field, and search only the CD. If you specify MSPAINT as the filename mask, it won't find it because it's not looking inside files.

Hmm.....Well, I thought it should, but it turned up nothing. I'm under the impression the search is ineffective on what's inside of compressed files. Wrong?

Okay, cool, I found it on the CD where you said, but the other pieces do not turn up in a search, in fact, the .exe didn't turn up in the search either. Is that because of the cabs/zips?

    Re: MS Paint in '98SE

The last time I had to find a program to manually install I had to use Explorer to open and search every cab file on the cd. The concept for a program to search compressed folders can't be unique to here though; maybe there's a 'zip crawler' available for download somewhere out there?

I have an idea Powerdesk can be used for searching within and the extracting of files from .cab's.

    Re: MS Paint in '98SE

A time-saving idea is to copy all the *.cab files from your CD to your HD. A search for something like MSPaint then takes a few seconds and comes up with around 10 files. It turns out the MSPaint files are scattered in WIN98_24.CAB, ...25, ...46 and ...49
This is in XP, where the contents *.CAB files are readable.

Remove the file name entry, and leave only the text - the second entry. Windows search will look inside of compressed files for a matching text string. What you are doing is telling the search feature to look at file names that match MSPAINT as well as to look inside the files for the same thing. Since the files are all compressed CABs, you need to look in - not at - the files' contents.

There's also the command line utility EXPAND which can do this, albeit not as pretty.

    Re: MS Paint in '98SE

I removed the file name entry as you directed and ~zilch~. So then I copied the win98 folder to the HD per MerC and ran it again and still ~zilch~. I ran a search on some other cabs on this unit and their contents were unsearchable as well. What's goin' on here?
