    Hide folders within explorer

We have recently deployed a patch to our desktops, which has created a folder on the root, which we do not want displayed. The folder name is a randomly generated string and look similar to $38796a65e86577bae0$. This directory cannot be deleted and using add/remove programs, does not remove the directory either. It is possible to rename the folder but we were wondering if there is any way to hide it. We don't really want to use a third party tool to do this so if anyone knows of a registry hack or something we would be really grateful.
    Thanks <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>

    Hi Lin,
If you rename the folder by removing the leading $ sign and leaving the trailing $ sign (i.e. $38796a65e86577bae0$ becomes 38796a65e86577bae0$), it should become hidden. (you'll need to refresh the Explorer view for it to take effect).
    Hope that helps.
    Regards,
    Rory

I like Rory's suggestion, and another alternative is to use the hidden file attribute - right click on the file and choose 'hidden'. Windows can be configured to display hidden files, and it will reveal anything with the hidden attribute - not sure if it also exposes the files named the way Rory suggested or not.

    Mark,
No it doesn't show them even if you've opted to show hidden files/folders - it's a good way to hide things from sneaky folks like me!

Or to protect us from ourselves, since you'd have to type in the entire path to get to it.... <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I assume that's why the default administrative shares are named that way. Not only do you need to gain admin rights first, you also need to know they're there in the first place!
It's one of those things I use on occasion for stuff users' pc's need access to but that I don't necessarily want them knowing about. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15> Like the network Doom directories....

Just so long as no-one figures out that when I complain about fragmentation, it's fragmentation grenades I'm talking about.... <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
