    Fax from Net (98SE)

There are heaps of fax applications available, but can anyone recommend a reliable freeware fax program that will let you fax a document/file when you are already connected to the net (ie fax from net) ?
    Thanks!

    Also:
If you still have your Win98 Installation CD, go to
    <CD>:toolsoldwin95messageusawfax.exe
and double-click it. It will install Microsoft Fax on your computer.
(Sorry I have US edition only, but yours must be similar. You can use
    <CD>:toolsoldwin95messageintlawfax.exe
    I'm not sure about it.).

I tried that a long time ago. As I recall, it either wanted to install or said I had to install Windows Messaging or something like that. Even more vaguely, I seem to recall it replaced my Outlook icon with Inbox from Win 95. I ended up with errors; never did work as seemless as it did in Win 95.

    Re: Fax from Net (98SE)

The eFax that DaveA referred you to is great. I have been using it for years w/o any problems across Win95/98/ME/XPH/XPP. Now, the problem that Mr. Rabichow speaks of can occasionally occur when certain compatibility issues arise w/ other mail programs - BUT - this only occurs with the eFax Messenger Plus. The regular eFax program that is free and does just the simple stuff is no longer downloadable from them. They offer the free version of eFax Messenger Plus so you have the nag to upgrade and all the other crap. Now, I was fortunate to save this executable and it works perfect w/ no hassles and no compatibility issues.

Here is what you do: click on DaveA's link above to eFax, sign up to get your free number. You will get to choose a number as close to you as possible (it really doesn't matter - I live in Ohio but my fax number is in Washington state). You may be required to download the software the first time - do that but don't install it!
After you sign up they will send you an e-mail w/ your new fax number. Once you get that, you may go and download the old simple, non-intrusive eFax app from my server. Just let me know and I will send you the URL.

This number you give out as your fax number (yours for life, basically - no minimum use or anything). Those blokes w/o e-mail simply fax to that number and it gets converted to an e-mail and will show up in your inbox. <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/icon_emailsend.gif> The simple eFax software is a tiny prog that allows you to view it. <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/icon_sing.gif> Ta-da! <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/icon_sing.gif>

    Hi Bruce:
Let me make sure I have this straight. I can receive a fax through my email (as an attachement?) & print it? What if I want to send a Word Document as a fax? Can I do that also?
    Thanks in advance,

Yes, Phil, you will receive an attachment that was originally sent as a fax from transmitter. It basically gets converted to a PDF type document by the computer assigned to your fax number, then forwards it to your e-mail address, all in a matter of seconds.

You sending a Word document as a fax has nothing to do with eFax. You would send e-mail, right? Unless the recipient doesn't have e-mail, you already have a fax/modem card so all you have to do is send the document to your fax (File>Send to>Fax recipient in Word) and it does it for you. Now, you can use eFax to send a fax, but that would be silly since you already have the equipment to do it yourself.

    Hi Bruce
Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to be a Holy Joe - there's alot that goes on in the privacy of my own PC I would not enjoy being made public - but have you stopped to think that what you are suggesting, and actively promoting, may not be entirely above-board?
Just because it's freeware does not mean the authors have given up their rights to it. Would they be happy, I wonder, to find you supplying a version of their software which does not carry the material promoting their commercial version? I only ask because if you have not obtained specific permission to supply the program, you are open to everything from litigation to censure. They only have to complain to your ISP and that's your website down the pan.
I have found that most freeware suppliers are only too happy to allow you to make their stuff available to a wider public, along with a link to their home site, of course. There are, however, exceptions. Sometimes there's an out-and-out refusal; sometimes the writer cannot be traced. I don't think, though, that this means one shouldn't try.
    If you've done all this, then congrats and I'm sorry for bothering you. <img src=/S/hiding.gif border=0 alt=hiding width=70 height=24>

    <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/oth14.gif> Greetings, MerC!

I must agree with what you present for the most part.........however......

I am not really actively promoting anything. I'm just helping someone out seeking what was brought to the board. And the the way I look at it is that the freeware which is licensed to be distributed freely as long as it is unaltered and for personal use only, I don't see how litigation could be brought to fruition as no one is required to use an upgrade and no deemed harm can ever be made evident. If one doesn't like the features of Irfanview 3.75 upgrade, for example, 3.6 is not prohibited from being obtained. I happen to hold the 1999 version of eFaxView, freely distributable per their license, despite the fact the latest version has attributes they feel are an improvement. No where is it stated at there site or in their software bylines one is required to use the latest upgrade while nothing expressly nor implicitly states disapproval of the former.

<IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/pimp1.gif>I do appreciate your concern and if I am doing something not above board (out in the open) I wish to be enlightened. Perhaps you read more into the post than does exist. I don't believe, however, that I have nor am suggesting or promoting anything that can be considered dishonorable, immoral, illegal, or otherwise just plain shady.

I just went to the site and you can still download the vanilla receive only version of efax.

The difference between it and the Plus version is that the plus version installs a "printer driver" so that you can Send with Efax -- it creates a readable fax, a self-contained EXE with reader, that you can either email or if you have the paid account, let efax fax for you.

I'm having trouble getting plus to work under XPP. And mainly I use it, as DaveA said, when someone has to send me a fax.

It may be the newer version has more ads, but frankly I don't recall it being any more obtrusive (it isn't very) than the first version I installed. (I've been using it since it was called HotSend)

    Re: Fax from Net (98SE)

    Hi Bruce,
The difference is that you're making it available on your website, so you cannot guarantee that those obtaining it will use it for personal use only. I wouldn't have thought it too much bother to e-mail the vendors and ask if what you are doing is within the terms of their EULA, and if so would they object..etc. etc.
But it's your site at risk. I can only proffer advice to err on the side of caution.

Hmmm...well the last time I was there it shows it as available, but upon attempting to download it it redirects to download of eFax Messenger Plus, the large multi-MB file rather than the old small KB eFax View exe.

    Mornin' MerC ~

When you say 'making it available on your website', are you referring to the manner in which you make apps available on a download page versus pointing an associate upon request to a non-public page where I happen to store a personal file? Or does it not make a difference? If that is the case then perhaps I shouldn't publicly announce my willingness to share said file, yes?

    Bruce,

I just downloaded the smaller (330) file from efax.com. It's still available.

So you don't have to risk the wrath of eFax by distributing it for them.

Though by my lights, since their real desire is to get your email, and you can't fully use Messenger without signing up for an account and handing over a vaild email, I don't think they'd care if you distributed it for them

    Re: Fax from Net (98SE)

Cool - that's great! They said awhile back they weren't distributing it anymore. I suppose enough people put up a hissy fit to induce the turnabout. I have quite a few associates out west and it is quite popular there.

Yes, they need your e-mail to assign you a # and to forward your 'fax'. But they have never abused that information. Every now and then you will get an in-house promo, but that's it.

    I'm glad it worked out. <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/icon_thumbsup.gif>
