Imported table missing first column (PPT2000 Word2

i'm not really much of a Powerpoint Ranger but I seem to know more than 80% of the other office types around me so I end up helping them with problems. Today one of the guys wanted to put a Word 2000 table into a slide. I did an Insert Object from File and was feeling pretty pleased with myself when he asked "What happened to the first column?" Sure enough, the first column was missing. You could see little stubs of the row lines headed off the the left but no data. I tried a couple of things, without effect. Finally, I went to Word and added a column to the left of the original first column. That succeeded in getting the original first column to appear in the slide, but the new first column was not visible. This was an acceptable solution for this effort but ...

What caused this and what should I have done?

    hmmm causes <img src=/S/hairy.gif border=0 alt=hairy width=15 height=15>, I let someone else catch that one.
However, I would have just copied and pasted the table. I find I get better results that way.

Well, we did that first. But the table came out 4 times the height of the slide. And when I dragged the handles to resize it, some of the words ended up on top of each other. I didn't want to try to fight with that. Besides, in the end I was able to link it to the Word doc so that he could make updates.

I can simulate the problem if I drag the table into what Word considers to be the section's left margin. This sort of makes sense: the picture representing the link in PPT omits the margin area for a better fit. Interestingly, however, PPT does pick up the right end of the table even if it, too, extends into the margin. The inconsistency suggests that rather than being part of a grand plan, the first behavior could be a bug.

I always hate cleaning up documents where Word tables have been manually positioned in strange places. Now here is an argument for not dragging tables around like they're drawings. Reminds me of that margarine commercial: "It's not nice to fool with mother nature."

Have the guy check where his table is positioned relative to the left margin and see if that cures it. I just noticed you can reset that in the Table Properties dialog (Table

Sounds to me like you have figured it out exactly. I'll let him know how to deal with it. Thanks.
