Re: Outlook XP is Haunted! (XP)

I've seen behaviour like that when a keyboard has a faulty Control or Alt key. Try tapping all the control and alt keys on the keyboard firmly and see if it makes a difference.

Re: Outlook XP is Haunted! (XP)

Hi, Stuart. Thank you for responding so quickly. I'm not sure what you mean by tapping those keys. I just sent myself a test message. I hit all those keys just for the heck of it before creating the message, after beginning my new message, and whenever outlook asked it I wanted to save my message. In the end, it simply closed the message and stuck it in drafts again. No help.

When you suggest "tapping" those keys, and if it had prevented this from happening, is that something I would have to live with having to do forever? Is this something I should contact Dell about? (Just set this new computer up last Sunday and am just about ready to set my old Win '98, 1987 vintage model back up!)

I was suggesting it as a "Diagnostic aid". Sometimes I have had a keyboard where one of the Control or Alt keys became "stuck" and this cleared it.

Do you only get this problem with Outlook or do other programs behave similarly?
Can you try to note exactly what the last thing was that you typed and what action happened each time?

Re: Outlook XP is Haunted! (XP)

I see. None of my keys seem to be stuck. I haven't finished installing all programs and haven't uploaded my data from the old computer yet. I've done a little test work in Excel and Word and haven't had any problems. It seems to be an outlook deal.

I understand what you're asking in terms of trying to isolate/duplicate actions I might be taking, and that was the first thing I tried to do, but it seems to be a totally random thing. I emailed Eileen a few minutes ago to see what the problem is with my signature (you can see it's not right), and even that message (Outlook was running in the background, but I selected the link from this website to open the message to her) had the same problem. Once, it even totally disappeared without going to drafts.

I've gone to the KB and can't find a thing about it, and I ready WOW and Office for Mere Mortals and have seen no reference to this problem.

Again, I appreciate your following up and welcome any ideas you or anybody else can provide!

    Thanx.

    Outlook XP is Haunted! (XP)

UPDATE: It happens everytime I type a period. The first time I type one, I'm prompted to save or not to save or to cancel. If I save, the message closes and goes to drafts. If I hit cancel, I can continue typing, but when I type the next period, the message closes and goes to drafts. If I choose not to save, the message disappears.

Please help. I've been using Outlook since '97, but I just got a new XP machine and installed Office XP Pro. Outlook is behaving strangely. When I create a new email message, while typing, sometimes Outlook simply closes my message (at least it's saved in drafts), sometimes asking me if I want to save it and sometimes not. Also, I can be in the middle of typing and the edit options box will open. It's not because I'm such a bad typist that I accidentally hit the wrong key, either. A few minutes ago, I was backspacing a few characters, and the edit box opened.

Does anybody know what's going on and how I can fix it?

Stuart, I updated my original post. I've found that when I type a period, I'm prompted to save. If I save, message goes to drafts and is closed. If I select cancel, I can continue working, but message closes and goes to drafts when I type the next period. If I tell it not to save, message disappears. I'm still working on trying to duplicate what brings up the edit menu.

This still sounds like a faulty keyboard to me. Have you got a spare one you can try?

Yes. I'll hook up my old one and see how that goes and let you know.

It sounds as though the period is behaving as though it were the Esc key. You can try testing this theory in dialogs and seeing if pressing . essentially "clicks" the Cancel button. Of if you are reading a message, whether it will close when you press the period key.

Are you using Word as your mail editor? Keycodes are very easily customized in Word, although this would be an exceptional assignment, since it has to be done in code rather than through the Tools

Re: Outlook XP is Haunted! (XP)

Well, I tried the period in a message I opened to read. Nothing. I don't know what testing the theory in dialogs means. I know the period acts like it's supposed to in my other programs. I wasn't using word as my email editor, although I tried it, and it didn't help. I'm contemplating uninstalling/reinstalling outlook but am worried about all that activation stuff all over again. Also, it's not just the period. I tried typing some really long stuff into an email message, and this happens every 1 second, regardless of what I'm typing. Haven't figured out yet what brings up the edit box.

    I'm at my wits' end.

Keyboard switch didn't work. I dunno know what to do. Will uninstall reinstall and see what kind of wrath I incur with the activation gods... I can't isolate it only to periods, I've sadly discovered since you and I last corresponded. As I replied to someone else, it happens every 1 second, regardless of what I'm typing (started my other test with a short sentence. Then started hitting periods to see it was happening then. Since then, I've tried longer sentences, and it still happens on the basis of time. Auto save is set for every 3 minutes, and although autosave shouldn't behave like that, if it did, it should be every 3 minutes...

    Sigh...

Before re-installing, did your XP come with the latest patches installed??

Office XP Update: Service Pack 1 (SP-1)

Probably this would be indicated in Help > About, but I don't use XP, so I'm not certain.

Is there any other software running that could be interacting with Office?

Re: Outlook XP is Haunted! (XP)

I managed to stumble across the problem. Speech was turned on in Tools on the menu bar. Don't know what that deal is (I didn't turn it on), but when I turned it off, the problem was gone. Go figure...

I'll check the service release, though, because I'll probably need the patch.
