    ICS with WinXP and 98SE

I have a laptop with WinXP Pro and a PC with Win98SE. The PC has the dial up Internet connection and the laptop needs to share this connection. A simple network exists between the two computers but the ICS wizard has not enabled the Internet connection sharing.

My question is this. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and or a suggested solution?

The Help files do seem to indicate that the WinXP machine should be the one with the Internet connection via the modem but that is not convenient in this case as the base PC is the one that will always be connected to the Internet whereas the notebook will literally come and go.

I have tried searching the Forum for ICS and networking but did not find anything relevant. All suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Leigh

Re: ICS with WinXP and 98SE

Well, I gave up on ICS when my home network of three machines, all running Win98SE were setup that way. I won't go into too much except to say that the primary problem was - what if the machine acting as the gateway goes down? You're off the net. There were other things that caused me to eventually buy a Linksys router. By that time I was using DSL rather than dialup, so I won't go into all that.

One of my favorite "help" sites for this kind of stuff is Practically Networked. Take a look and see if you can get steered in the right direction. Come back for more if this doesn't help. By the way, (don't get upset) you do have two NICs in that Win98 machine, don't you? Let us know.....

    Thanks Big Al

Yes, there are two NICs and the network (simple crossover cable connection) sometimes 'forgets' that there is a another PC connected when booting up. It appears best that you boot the PC (Win98SE and THEN the laptop (WIN XP Pro).

I will check the site (Practically Connected) and come back if I get anything worth reporting.
