    ODBC INSTALLER (WINDOWS XP)

Hi everyone here I am again asking for help. I bought a cd called Chessmaster, and when I went to install it from the CD here is the error message I reeived:
The ODBC resource DLL (C:WINDOWSSystem32odbcint.dll) is a different version than the ODBC setup.dll (C:WINDOWSSystem32ODBCCP32.DLL)
You need to re install the ODBC components to ensure proper operation.

Where do I find this? I went to the Microsoft download site and it stated when I got the error message to click on a link that would take me to download it and then when I clicked on the link, it said "this page has been moved," and didn't say where they moved it to.

Any suggestions on where I can find the current ODBC so I can use the Chess CD? <img src=/S/bagged.gif border=0 alt=bagged width=22 height=22>

Did you try downloading from http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm? You're looking for MDAC - Microsoft Data Access Components.

Unless you have a specific reason not to, it's usually best to get the latest version. Using this logic, the MDAC 2.7 RTM Refresh appears to be the one that you should download. Sadly, the page is not easy to navigate, and the download link is poorly denoted, so here is the same link that you might find if you dug into that page: http://www.microsoft.com/data/download_270RTM.htm

    Re: ODBC INSTALLER (WINDOWS XP)

I did that and I still get the same error message. I then found the dll ODBCCP32.DLL in a dll library and I downloaded it to system32. It asked me if I wanted to replace the old one and I said no, and I just added it and called it ODBCCP32.DLLnew
I am still getting the same error message. I am also getting an error message that says "Cannot open smartbrd.vxd.

Alas and Alack, I installed it and I still get the same error message. I even tried to run it in Win 95/98 Compatability mode; no success.

Any other suggestions? I found the dll file odbccp32.dll in an dll library. Should I download and replace the existing odbccp32.dll?

<hr>Should I download and replace the existing odbccp32.dll<hr>
No! Please don't do that. DLLs usually come in groups - the ODBC update has several, and they are dependent upon each other. If you piece-meal this together you will almost certainly wind up with an unstable system. If I'm not mistaken, you won't be able to install an older version of the ODBC drivers on XP. As soon as the installation replaces key files, Windows File Protection will leap into action and replace any files that got stomped on. That didn't occur to me when I first replied.

You should contact the vendor of the software and ask them what specific version ofr the ODBC drivers you should be using. DLLs should - yes, should - be backwards compatible, but in reality that doesn't always happen. Essentially the problem here is that you have a shiny-new DLL file that should be working with your program, but isn't. Compatibility mode doesn't change things like this, but it was a good thought. If they haven't certified their program to run on XP, then you may just be out of luck unless you have a 98 system floating around, or feel comfortable setting up a dual-boot PC for situations like this.

    Re: ODBC INSTALLER (WINDOWS XP)

Yes, Mark you are correct. I went to their site, and they state on their site that Chessmaster does NOT run on XP. Woe is me. But, yes I have another computer up and running with Win 98SE on it. I will try Chessmaster on that; if it doesn't work, then it's the manufacturer's CD and I will have to deal with them.

    Thanks for your help.
