    Lockin Desktop Icons

For some reason my Win98SE desktop icons won't stay arranged the way I want them. After carefully arranging my icons, whenever I reboot, they are redistributed according to some hidden gremlin, pretty much always in the same way the gremlin prefers. Not all icons get rearranged, only those along the upper right and lower left edges of the screen. The icons are always relocated to columns on the lower left edge, shuffling the icons that were previously there. I've tried guessing at a few fixes, but there doesn't seem to be any place I can find that specifically refers to my problem. Also, I just noticed my Start Bar icons (not the Systray icons) are also restored after I rearrange them, but these, at least, are restored to the positions I had previously placed them in. The desktop icons were never located by me where my OS now forces them to go. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Simply right-click anywhere on the desktop and go to ARRANGE ICONS , AND UNCHECK AUTOARRANGE.

Thanks for the advice, but Auto Arrange was the first place I looked. I don't use it for reasons such as the problem I'm having. which has to be rooted somewhere deep and un-menued.

    Re: Lockin Desktop Icons

I downloaded WinTidy and I'll try it out tomorrow, but, even if it works, there's got to be some place in Win98 that's got a little switch or some corrupt code, or possibly the Registry. I'm more concerned that this little problem with desktop icons is just a symptom of a larger problem that might explain the more than occasional crashes I've been experiencing lately. And, that's after reinstalling Win98 not long ago with the idea that that might make things better. They got better, but obviously not better enough.

Aren't these symptoms indicative of the latent/dormant properties of one of the W32Klez or other virii, perhaps?? <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/nurse.gif>

Do you have TweakUI (Version 1.33)? If so, tick the box shown below.

Possibly, but NAV gives me a clean bill of health. The few Klez attempts I've experienced have been caught and quarantined. Is there another way other than NAV I can confirm I'm clean?

Edited by <font color=red>WyllyWylly</font color=red> to add URL code. See the Quick Guide.[/i]

I tried to download TweakUI from your link (and about 5 or 6 others) but each time, when I pressed the Download button on the TweakUI page, I was taken instead to the WinME home page at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsme/guide.asp which obviously has nothing to do with TweakUI or its download. However, I finally found a link via Google that actually got me the Tweak UI download (http://www.bondgroup.net/TweakUI.htm). Very strange!?! Anyway, now that I've got TweakUI installed and running, I discover that the box you indicated was already checked. Rebooting once more finally left my icons as I had arranged them, so I guess my problem is solved. But, I wonder why this fix is so obscure and related to saving Explorer settings. Does Microsoft get a commission on mental hospital enrollments?

Speaking for myself only, this was one of the reasons I tossed Norton 2002 AV in the waste receptacle as it missed some Klez virii that AVG and Trend-Micro did not. As for a second opinion on a clean bill of health <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/nurse.gif> go to Trend-Micro's HouseCall online virus checker as it is always up-to-date. There used to be a HouseCall link at the top of the forum page, but I don't see it now.
