The attached dialog box was displayed by opening your document and...

Selecting your req heading 2 paragraph

Format > Style > Modify > Format > Numbering > Customise > More

Selecting number 3 in the left hand column.[/list]Note that the third level is associated with Heading 3, you need to change this to Req Heading 3, then step down the other levels setting them too.

Please note that this list gallery dialog box is very strange in its behaviour and you must set the settings for all your levels in one visit to the box. You use the same box to set the indent, make sure there is enough room for your numbers or Word inserts extra tabs that will confuse you too!

I tried it, but it didn't work! If that were the true break, then Req_Head wouldn't have calculated correctly. When I tried resetting the "Link Level Style" as you suggested, MS would mysteriously "re-name" styles in other portions of the document. Additionally, it randomly deleted the numbering for H2.... but then "Vwa-La"... all of the other numberings corrected themselves. Any attempt to correct H2 becomes a vicious circle.

Long and short of it.... I started a new document and created the numbed heading schemas from scratch. Seems to have worked this time (though I haven't added any formatting to it yet)... - Jody

Re: Auto Oultine - Breaking Character (Word 97)

Ok, I completed the "re-do"... formatting in place... nothing broke. For this model, I created a Style HEADING for which I based everything on. In the original, I think what got me "in trouble" was the fact that I only need 1-4 Heading Levels and 2-9 Req_Heading Levels. ... Thus, I tried to base the Req_Heading levels on a previous Heading level.... (hope you were able to follow that logic). All in All, it didn't work and twisted upon its self. But oddles of thanks to your help. - Jody
