    Page Border (2002)

When I place a border on a page (format>shading & borders>page), it appears fine on the print preview, but every time I print, I get a dialogue box saying the border is outside of the printing area & do I wish to proceed, etc.. Now sometimes it prints fine despite the dialogue, but most of the time it lops off the border on the bottom of the page, even if there is no text. My page margins are 1" top & bottom & 3/4" on sides.

I am not well versed in Word and would appreciate a fix.

    Hi Bruce,
I think the page border is defined from the printable area in your printer's settings, not by the document's margins. For example, if you set the margins to 0, and ignore Word's advice about them being outside the printable area, you'll find that you can type outside the page border.

What this could all come down to is that you've got one size of paper in your printer (eg letter (8.5 x 11)) and your document's being prepared for another size (eg A4), or that the unprintable area defined in your printer's settings is wrong.

Okay, that makes sense, so I went and checked and both the printer and Word's settings are for plain 8 1/2 x 11 document. For the heck of it, I took the file to another 'puter in XP and it said and did the same thing. I don't know, but my suspicion is that it is Word and not the printer as the same printers & 'puters didn't encounter this w/ the Word 2000 & Win98SE.

In the HP driver dialogs for Windows 98, I remember there being an "Unprintable Area" dialog (see fuzzy graphic from 3/21/2001). Whatever the dimensions of that area, Word will complain about printing there, and the printer might not be able to handle printing there.

I cannot find a similar dialog in Windows 2000. Would love to know where it went!

Nothing similar in any HP printer properties, but, when looking through options of Word's printing settings, would 'Allow A4/Letter resizing' or 'Scale to paper size' have anything to do w/ this?

No, that's something else entirely. Try this: WD2002: Page Borders May Be Displayed or Printed Incorrectly

For future reference, this looks like a helpful compilation of information on printing issues with Word 2002/XP:

Crap! Well, that was a cornucopia of info, but I tried the fixes even they weren't exactly the same error messages and still no dice. I need to try another printer. I tried on one machine w/ XPP and HP 932C printer, got the message, and it cut off the bottom of the border. So I tried another machine w/ XPH & HP1215 printer, got the same message, but printed NO border. Go figure. <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/spontancombust.gif>
